Can not keep paying divi if they do not increase profits? Is this still a viable business model or have they just loaded up with debt to grow revenue?IMO Stapleton is on his last legs if Q1 is under performing! As they say.... The jury is still out!

Not a total disaster then. They seem more than upbeat about this Q1 trading and I will wait for them to announce that to see where they are versus peers. We are now entering a recession and the UK consumer is definitely tapped out somewhat! If they have kept on track in Q1 then I may change my stance.Proceed with caution until they announce Q1 results.Until then I am on the proverbial fence?

.
It's effectively the same as rent

Except several years of forward lease payments are recorded as a liability right now

Halfords: fickle trends can lead down a bumpy road

Hope this helps other people like me to keep an eye on the situation at Halfords.

Spob,
if the lease liabilities are not debt why are they paying £8.8 million per year in interest on these liabilities? That's not rent, it's debt.

Finance costs:
Bank borrowings (1.4) (0.1)
Amortisation of issue costs on loans (0.8) (0.7)
Commitment and guarantee fees (1.1) (1.5)
Other interest payable - -
Interest payable on lease liabilities (8.8) (9.0)
Net Finance costs (12.1) (11.3)

IFRS 16 introduces a single lessee accounting model and requires a lessee to recognise assets and liabilities for all leases with a term of more than 12 months, unless the underlying asset is of low value. A lessee is required to recognise a right-of-use asset representing its right to use the underlying leased asset and a lease liability representing its obligation to make lease payments.
