Software operators seen catching U.S. sports betting contracts

Jul. 5, 2018 8:29 AM ET|By: Clark Schultz, SA News Editor
Height Capital Markets analyst Stefanie Miller has an interesting note out for investors looking to take advantnge in the expansion of sports betting in the U.S.
"Our analysis finds the software platform companies, rather than the sports book operators or casinos, will be the biggest beneficiaries of the recent sports betting legalization in the U.S. due to expected profit margins, small competitor pool, and new business opportunities," writes Miller.
London-traded Game Account Network and Stockholm-traded Kambi Group are highlighted as two companies well-positioned to win U.S. contracts from casino operators

Revise Rule 135 to stop administrators from taking fees out of client assets

On the collapse of a stock-broker, this rule allows administrators to take fees out of client assets / money held in “ring-fenced” accounts. A conflict of interest arises between returning assets to clients in a timely fashion and the administrators' corporate motivation to maximise fee income.

Individuals have invested entire life-savings via ISAs and SIPPs under the assumption that their assets / money are ring-fenced and protected.

Revise Rule 135 of the Investment Bank Special Administration Rules (England and Wales) 2011 to preserve the sanctity of ring-fenced accounts and prevent a break-down of the trust in the UK financial system.

The FSCS, which is funded by a levy on financial institutions, must cover any and all costs incurred in returning ‘ring-fenced’ assets to clients.

Seems like everybody reading this should sign really.

Yep, good news - note that it's a multi-year deal, and will benefit this coming H2:

"GAN extends content development and distribution agreement with Everi Holdings

Multi-year deal to develop & distribute 10 Everi slot titles on-board GAN market leading enterprise software platform

London & Dublin ces and online gaming content in the United States, today announces that casino technology solutions supplier, Everi Holdings Inc. The games will be deployed locally on the GAN Platform for distribution by GAN to its diverse operator clients of Simulated Gaming coast-to-coast in the US and real money Internet gaming in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and in Europe....

.....Development fees received by GAN under the operation of this Agreement will generate a positive contribution to GAN revenues in H2 2018 and H1 2019.

West Virginia sports betting regulations approvedIt's one thing to be able to go to a casino or a racetrack and bet on sporting events. It's quite another to do it from home, or anywhere else you happen to be.In West Virginia, "home or anywhere else you happen to be" most likely will be an option, sooner than later. PFT has learned that The Greenbrier Resort and FanDuel have reached an agreement that will result in FanDuel providing retail, online, and mobile sports wagering services within West Virginia. So, by all appearances, West Virginia will be poised for the coming football season (and possibly beyond) to attract citizens of its various nearby states (Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee) to cross the border, fire up their cell phone devices, access the FanDuel app, and wager money on the NFL and other sports. The announcement of a sports betting deal for FanDuel comes with slightly strange timing. The DFS operator isn't the middle of being acquired by Dublin-based gaming company Paddy Power Betfair. That deal could close as soon as early July.FanDuel, by itself, has no known means to provide a sports betting product on its own, so this deal is almost certainly predicated on the PPB deal closing in short order. The deal would close, in theory, well before West Virginia launches sports betting - mobile and otherwise - officially.PPB subsidiary Betfair US has also formedĀ its own partnership with Tioga Downs (New York) and Meadowlands Racetrack (New Jersey), planning to use the FanDuel brand in those two states, too.

GAN said the extension was a multiyear one.

Interesting news from casino.org regarding New York and in response to the non passage of legislation - seems they may not need it after all! Sports Betting could be introduced to 4 upstate casinos under an existing 2013 law.To quote......The New York State Gaming Commission says "in the short term" the agency will release regulations authorizing four upstate casinos to begin taking sports bets.

Worth pointing out the second holdings RNS today - Ravenswood Investment have landed with a 3.7% stake with 3.15m shares:

That's 7.66% of GAN tied up between them and Long Light Capital. Noteworthy that both are American-based investment funds....

One silver lining regarding the failure to pass NY legislation:The Meadowlands Racetrack has just announced that it will open its sportsbook on July 15. That date will make it the fourth location in New Jersey for players to bet on sports.Monmouth Park and Borgata in Atlantic City opened their sportsbooks just last week. The new Ocean Resort Casino, which is scheduled to open June 28, is also expected to have a temporary sportsbook up and running on opening day.The announcement catapults north New Jersey into the market more quickly than expected. Track manager Jeff Gural cited New York's decision not to adopt legal sports betting as the reason for the accelerated timetable."New York did me such a favor by not passing sports betting," Gural told the Associated Press. "There are 15 million people that live within 20 miles of the Meadowlands."JOY AT THE MEADOWLANDS AND IN TRENTONGural's glee was palpable in his announcement. His good cheer was likely echoed in the State Assembly. The majority of the Meadowlands sports betting income is likely to come from New Yorkers crossing into New Jersey. However, the taxes from their wagering will go to Trenton, rather than Albany.Depending on the type of bet and the manner in which it was placed, the New Jersey government stands to collect up to 13 percent from sports wagers. Legislators will be happy to do collect those taxes from a racetrack six miles from New York City.

GAN are mentioned here in connection with the approval a couple of days ago of the opening of the Ocean Resort Casino in Atlantic City on June 28th:

"Just shy of 2,000 slot machines will be housed on the 130,000 sq ft casino floor along with upwards of 100 gaming tables and eight poker tables. The center of the casino floor will feature a 7,500 sq ft sports book to be run by William Hill US, and while it won’t open immediately, Leone said that, on opening day, sports betting will be available at a temporary sports book until the permanent one is ready to go in approximately six weeks.

The property, along with partner GameAccount Network, has also applied for an internet gaming license and is expected to be on offer at the casino from July 1."

Last year was 5th July so perhaps they will do the same again. Can't see why they wouldn't do.
