Better than that - we were inline with last year to the end of Sept and ahead at the end of November suggesting good momentum in Oct & Nov.

Blimey, with this ASC profits warning, its a shame we have not had a TS here for months and have no visibility as to what is going on.

Oh, no, that's wrong, we had a TS only 10 days ago and the business continues to grow at quite a rate

I've just stumbled across this quote by Peter Lynch: "Frequently, years of patience are rewarded in a single year."

How very true.

rhomboid, GAW's share price is always affected by High Street woes and sentiment towards UK retail. Has been for decades. Although it is a manufacturer it is invariably referred to as a "retailer", even by analysts who know it very well. This is not all bad, as it always offers trading opportunities.

Hi Nod

I think you need to distinguish between sentiment towards GAW as reflected in the share price...& actual GAW trading results which is all we care about in the long run.

The latter is IMO almost wholly unaffected by ‘high st woes’ other than being able to reduce shop lease costs over time..& relocate to the best locations near public transportation hubs etc at far lower cost...so on balance high st decline/shift to experiential usages is a significant tailwind imo

Bad news on the UK High Street always affects GAW even though the UK is now less than 25% of our revenue.Mike Ashley predicts U.K. Retail are going to be "smashed to pieces" due to Brexit worries.

The GBP is still falling against USD and most non-Euro currencies. Against the USD it is down 25% from its high point in 2014 and now testing its post-referendum lows.Against EUR it's down but not as much because the Euro also suffers from this Brexit uncertainty. With half our revenues from outside Europe & UK this is good for GAW as we benefit from a lower GBP. Even on our European sales we benefit, but not as much. There would be a relief rally if UK Gov passes the Brexit deal. But if it doesn't pass then GBP will likely fall further against USD and other currencies.Bad for the UK but good for GAW.

Thanks w1. Looks like a bunch of unattractive options.I hope they have another referendum now the UK public understands more clearly the pros and cons of Leave, in particular the Irish conundrum. It has been an expensive education process for the public and the politicians.

I think USD/GBP drops a bit but not that much as some people think and lots of UK facing stocks are already very cheap (but they could fall further). A no deal sees USD/GBP in the teens.

The bookies now offering evens or on for a 2nd referendum, which seems the most likely. There is no parliamentary majority for:
hard Brexit
May's deal
Norway +
Remain/revoke article 50
Canada +++ (and that does not work with the EU)

Northern Ireland is the circle that can not be squared and the politicians are chasing their tails.

The real choice is between hard/WTO and remain/revoke art 50. There are simply too many contradictions in anything in between and none have the support of Parliament.

I just wish the politicians would be honest with everyone and stop lying and/or treating the electorate like idiots, which applies to both parties.

Is a vote against Brexit already priced into the GBP?The USD is close to the 18 month high against GBP. The USA doesn't look too well but perhaps is seen as a safe haven from GBP and EUR.

The relationship with Titan seemed to be strained with GW having to spend too much time editing the drafts "Games Workshop have told Titan that the fees earned from comics license don't pay for the amount of attention they have to give the comic books for approval."GW has always been a stickler for licensees staying close to the theme and characters.

Anything that helps recruit new customers, especially younger ones, is IMHO very important.

The Other 4% would also include board games and collectible cards that are very popular within our sub-culture. With an ecosystem, some products may not be very profitable (or even loss making) but customers spend their money on other related stuff.

GW must see the comics creating business if they are considering doing them in-house. Like the magazines, comics are potentially a way to market the brand to new young customers. Get them into the 'sub-culture' at an early age.

The comics royalties pretty irrelevant in financial terms with royalties in 2018 89% computer games, 7% mobile & only 4% other. Looks like it was just more trouble than it was worth.

Games Workshop sales set to rise on Warhammer success
from Daily Telegraph
7 DECEMBER 2018 • 3:27PM

Games Workshop continues to defy the high street downturn with its hit Warhammer game driving sales.

The Nottingham-based retailer said it expected sales in the six months to December to come in 14pc higher at roughly £124m, while profits are estimated to reach £41m, a 6pc increase on the same period last year.

Kevin Rountree, chief executive, said Games Workshop's key Warhammer series was "in great shape in our core markets".

"We have built on the progress we made last year and the results are considerable given the backdrop of major projects," he said.

These projects include increasing factory capacity and overhauling its back office software.

Games Workshop sells figurines that customers build, paint and collect and then use to battle each other in strategy games. It released the latest version of its flagship tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000 in July last year.

Shares in the FTSE 250 company rose 6pc to 315p in afternoon trading.

The upbeat statement comes just two months after Games Workshop spooked investors with a vague market update warning of “uncertainties in the trading periods ahead”, sending its shares falling by as much as 8pc.

Analysts at Peel Hunt said today's update was “stellar”;, given the company's "exceptional" performance last year.

“Our recent visit to Nottingham demonstrated that the business is in good shape, with clear momentum in products and facilities,” they added.

Games Workshop has staged somewhat of a comeback over the past three years, after falling into trouble in 2015. More recently it has been bucking the doom and gloom engulfing the high street.

In June it briefly reached a £1bn market value for the first time after announcing that full-year profits were set to double.

Patrick O’Brien at GlobalData said: “Games Workshop continues to buck the trend in the UK, continually achieving the positive like-for-like store sales that are eluding so much of the rest of the high street.

“Its niche and original proposition resonates fantastically with its target market, developing a cult following through its strong social media presence.”

"I understand that it is likely that Games Workshop will publish its own Warhammer 40K comic books in 2019. It is possible it may have an easier relationship with itself than with Titan Comics. Although of course there’s no guarantee of that."
