The Guardian investment column: Dignity (buy) advantage of owning the stock is the business is predictable.

The company said pre-arranged funerals were up by 4.5 percent in 2007, with 197,300 people making plans and pre-paying ahead of their deaths.

The death rate in 2007 boosted earnings, with a 1 percent increase in people dying in the UK, compared to 2006, according to estimates by the UK Office of National Statistics.

The company, which has bought 27 funeral locations and closed two in the past year, said its outlook was positive, with good growth prospects.

"This is a business predictable to a high degree of certainty," analysts at WH Ireland Leeds said in a research note, retaining an "Outperform" rating on Dignity's stock.

The final dividend per share was up 10 percent to 6.67p.

interims infer that the company will beat expectations for final year all things being equal.

and unless death has gone out of fashion I confidently expect them to do so

its just that there's so many short term bargains around why bother with a recession proof bore like this when theres dosh you can collect quick?

was out yesterday at 717 after holding for a long while. tracking the ftse250 won't help this. but might bounce off long term trend line

Thanks. Less profit after today. Would think this would go up with the novovirus and the falling markets.Best to add it back in then there is no further questions from Hmrc.

Fatfin - it reads as though the proceeds of the redemption of the B shares are potentially subject to CGT, unless HMRC decides to apply section 703 and treat it as income, which the Company thought was unlikely. How this CGT liability is worked out is unclear and it may well be that adding the £1 back in when selling the shares is the only sensible way of working it out. I'm in no way an expert on CGT and I didn't own DTY shares at the time of the cash distribution so it doesn't affect me.

KASG it was a return of £1.00 per share held as a "B" share distribution redeemable immediatly - so a "cash" distribution? it is where you see the price dip back in July '06. I seem to remember reading somewhere that when you sold you had to add it back in for CGT.

Edit: thanks for the link. As far as I can understand there is no further tax liable?

Looks appealing after today's fall - but no point in rushing in tomorrow looking at the DOW. Haven't used 2007/8 ISA allowance yet.

Fatfin - how can a dividend be subject to CGT? If it's a dividend isn't it income by definition and irrelevant by the time you sell?

Edit: Read section 5 of regarding the tax situation following the return of cash.

imo this is going to be one of the few big winners of 2008

I agree with weemonkey, it is the only certainty in this world
and people will spend on saying goodbye to their loved ones whatever their circumstances

I held these when we had a £1.00 special dividend. When I come to sell is this subject to CGT?

Seems fitting that Scottish Widows should have a major interest, now 9%.

Sounds reasonable. The long moving average is a straight edge.

JL9 the earnings are rock solid though and the comapany is growing slowly by aquisition. hence the strong rating

The earnings growth seems very pedestrian. I can't see why these shares remain so highly rated. Anyone?

re-assuring statement and in these tricky times we should benefit from Dignity's defensive qualities
