03/4/2004 11:17 | April 01, 2004 Dignity to float at 230p per share Britain’s largest provider of funeral services will be valued at £184 million when it floats on the stock market tomorrow. Shares in Dignity have been priced at 230p - at the lower end of the range announced by the company last month. The firm, which operates 507 funeral homes and 21 crematoria across the country, said the placing had attracted strong demand from "quality institutional investors" and was oversubscribed. Conditional dealings among institutions will begin tomorrow, with full trading expected on April 8. Chief executive Peter Hindley and three other directors will share around £5.5 million, or 3 per cent of the company’s value, through the sale of shares, but will retain two-thirds of their stake in the firm. Mr Hindley said he was pleased with the share price despite it being at the lower end of expectations. "It is a difficult market at the moment, the stockmarket is very jittery," he said. The move represents a return to the market for the Sutton Coldfield-based business, which was taken private in 1994 following the acquisition of two public companies - Great Southern and Plantsbrook - by a US firm. Up to now it has been owned by the management and private equity company Montagu. Last year, Dignity conducted 69,012 funerals, representing 11.7 per cent of total deaths in Britain, and 39,342 cremations, equal to 6.6 per cent of deaths. Dignity has said that Britain’s stable death rate of approximately 600,000 deaths a year since 1950 gives it a constant source of revenue. It also believes there is potential for expansion of the firm, given the number of funeral directors wishing to sell their businesses. The company will use the money raised through the flotation on the main market to reduce debt. | ![]() ariane | |
