Sell in May and go away was the right thing to do.

WH Smith shops are awful, mostly dirty cluttered surprisingly they have bucked the retail trend but for how long?

Boots has opened a new store in Covent Garden and signed up a 20 year lease with a rent of £3.3 million per annum !

Don't know whether that is a mistake but that is a hefty rental with having to finance hefty rates as well and other costs and staff.

Probably a high footfall area and good sales area.

A city store will get good sales but many towns will not make enough profit on lower sales.

Q

Yes seen this in the Mail 200 possible closures for Boots the chemist. They had already forecast flat sales recently and it looks like trading will be getting worse hence the need for store closures.

The High Street getting worse by the day some towns will be like ghost towns.

A good half the stock in stores can probably be bought elsewhere if not more so they wont be making much of a margin on a lot of the stuff they stock.

I think the High Street going to end up worse than it was during the financial crisis as online moved on as well.

The only way to prevent any further deterioration on the High Street is to reduce the rates on shops but it would have to be made up elsewhere possibly through taxation or general household rates.

Marks & Spencer was among the risers, having dropped sharply last week on the back of news of a discounted rights issue and a dividend cut.

David Cheetham, chief market analyst at XTB, said that despite the strong share price performance on Tuesday, a look back at prior performance makes for "pretty grim viewing", with a six-month decline in the stock price of almost 20% and a near-40% drop seen in the past couple of years.

He said "a litany of mistakes" was to blame for this poor performance and while a demotion from the FTSE 100 in the upcoming quarterly reshuffle wouldn't materially impact business operations, "it would likely do more damage to its weary investors and their holdings".

Look for other ‘combination’ stores like Pets At Home. Those which combine their retail space with profit making, complementary activities.

I’ll bet there are not many, but this is the future.

Latest on Philip Green's Arcadia group which is on a knife edge to oblivion says the Mail

All now depends on the pension trustees and landlords. If they don't accept a CVA Arcadia faces administration but even after a CVA the company will still struggle.

The miserable Bank Holiday wont have helped fashion sales as the weather has been far cooler than last year so I suspect fashion sales will be down.

Dismal results for both Labour and Conservatives in European Elections more trouble ahead for the markets.

Nigel Farage smashed the opposition to pieces.

Surprisingly Liberals and Green party gained good results as well.

Difficult to work out what made people vote Liberal and Green the latter did well in Europe so climate change would have had an impact apart from BREXIT.

robot got no votes and lost his deposit serves him right for putting the girlies before politics and QANTAS lost his deposit as well.

All in all politics is in a mess and expect turbulent times again and a no deal BREXIT will reduce GDP with a possibility of a recession and interest rate cut.

Mail says Philip Green to offer more assets to satisfy pension fund of £185 million but pension deficit on administration £750 million!

Sooner or later the group will still go bust imo and the pension trustees may believe that so wary of Philip Greens offer.

Looks like PG in deep trouble at the moment.
