01/3/2005 17:32 | from todays telegraph Elsewhere, shipping stock Clarkson rose 7½ to an all-time high of 855p. Traders said vague chatter of a bid, possibly from a Japanese company, was helping to lift the stock, although volumes were modest yesterday. | cat
01/3/2005 17:32 | Old habits die hard, eh andrbea? laf :op | lafiamma
01/3/2005 13:31 | The international shipping consultancy Clarkson estimates the supply of container vessels would increase by 12.6% in 2006, representing the highest growth in the last 20 years, and it believes at this rate it would be difficult for demand to keep up. Tisco therefore expects RCL's freight rate in 2006 will decline to $238 per TEU. | andrbea
01/3/2005 11:51 | rivaldo, I wouldn't say that 'vague chatter' means much really, so am with you when you say "seems unlikely", especially as we have been here before. Remember the stronger than 'vague' chatter a while back (few months) that rallied the price, but never came to anything? | lauders
01/3/2005 07:44 | Now this is interesting...what on earth would a bidder have to pay - £12, £13? Seems unlikely though given CKN's determined expansion: "Elsewhere, shipping stock Clarkson rose 7½ to an all-time high of 855p. Traders said vague chatter of a bid, possibly from a Japanese company, was helping to lift the stock, although volumes were modest yesterday." | rivaldo
28/2/2005 08:35 | Excellent start to the week - yet another breakout. Onwards and upwards, and probably now on a historic P/E of only 10 or maybe less, without even taking into account the huge cash pile. | rivaldo
26/2/2005 13:38 | tks rivaldo I agree: we should see 9 pounds at least on the back of good results some last postings: BHP BILLITON WARNS OF CHINA CONGESTION Diversified commodities and energy giant BHP Billiton's chief executive, Chip Goodyear, has warned that congestion into and out of ports in China and delivery disruptions could act as a serious restraint on groupwide business and production in 2005. "Port, rail and logistics systems are under a lot of pressure at present and our business is operating under its full capacity," Mr Goodyear said. "Any issue that effects the supply chain will have a lot of influence on our customers and the production of goods they need." Lloyd's List - 17/02/2005 and on Panamax segment (21.2.05) So the market is rising, and most players are adamant for the next few months, but beyond this horizon the first warning voices can be heard." 26/2/2005 12:13 | This is from today's Independent - nice to see they've finally woken up to the commodity boom and its effect on freight rates! "And traders recommended another way to play the buoyant demand for commodities: shipping brokers, whose fortunes have perked up thanks to China's demand for imports. Clarkson was up 32.5p to an all-time high of 847.5p." | rivaldo
26/2/2005 11:54 | Yep, thx from me too andrbea - kept me going through the quiet days. Always good to take profits, but I'm glad you still have a decent holding. It looks like there's plenty still to go for - the ease with which CKN smashed through old highs suggests so anyway. | rivaldo
25/2/2005 22:48 | lol you might actually be correct. :-) | cat
25/2/2005 18:37 | tks lads; your comments are much appreciated. I left, incidentally, a third of my holding in ckn as I can still see it rising from here :-) with MMs you never know on results day. do they reward the company for (hopefully) bumper 2004 results or do they look hard for something negative in the forward guidance and price them down. .. the former I'm sure. | andrbea
25/2/2005 18:25 | strip out the cash and CKN is on a p/e of 7 If they make £20m it'll drop to 5 :-) | cat
25/2/2005 17:57 | Thanks andrbea, your input was much appreciated. Hope all goes well with your other shares. Must admit, I'm thinking about selling at the minute. Clarksons is on a PE of about 10 at the top of the biggest shipping boom in decades. I have no idea if the price will go much higher, or if the boom will continue, but there's definitely more downside risk than there was a year or two ago. I think I'll hold on through the run up to the results, hopefully we'll get some more buying in the next month. Cheers, T | mr. t
25/2/2005 17:08 | thanks andrbea - I echo rochdae in that your posting helped me hold a very large position in CKN. Shame you're off cos this break to a new high is impressive. My target of £11+ now looks like it might not be too long in coming. (also in slv and aen) | cat
25/2/2005 15:52 | tks the both of you. a related shipping stock doing well, right now, is hmy (lng sector) My most recent buys (this month) were her, 2 uranium plays (zba and ura) and oil (blvn and slv). And before that aen. | andrbea
25/2/2005 15:25 | andrbea, Your research kept me going during the recent drop when I was tempted to bail out. Good luck with the other investments. | rochdae
25/2/2005 13:47 | Cheers andrbea, good luck with your other investments. laf ;o) | lafiamma
25/2/2005 13:46 | won't be posting here any more reason ckn went through my 830 p target, so sold two thirds of mine Good luck on the other thread | andrbea
25/2/2005 11:03 | sells greater than buys by nearly 3 times on very low volume. I love this stock and have been holding it since below £2 | daviemac
25/2/2005 10:48 | lafiamma Many thanks for suggestion. I only use H. B. for small deals on behalf of the kids where £7.00 dealing cost is a consideration. I guess you get what you pay for! | happywanderer
25/2/2005 10:34 | Good write up in last month's Momentum! Breakout! -- added in my Sipp! | ddav
25/2/2005 10:29 | happy, I'd change your broker if I were you! Comdirect are excellent and I've used them for over 2 years now without any problems. There was one time when I tried to sell a share and their server had a problem when I clicked accept. In the end sold the shares a few pence lower. That problem would have cost me £600. I never chased them up, but found at the end of the day they'd credited my account with an extra £600 because they had realised that there was a momentary problem with their server. I've done about 1,000 trades with them and that was the only problem ,which was rectified without me having to chase it up! They also have a referral offer whereby if you transfer to them or open an account via a referral you'll get a free £50. If you'd like me to refer you then email me at the_share_bear@hotma laf ;o) | lafiamma
25/2/2005 10:24 | Hoodless Brennan ????? | happywanderer
25/2/2005 10:23 | Its OK to buy on Comdirect. Just did a dummy order. | chester |
