14/6/2010 13:51 | It does not matter which division BA is in, it must reduce its costs to survive. Surely of the cabin crews are able to hoist in such a basic concept. A primary requirement is for BA to find the money for investment in the future. If BA does not have this money, it will die just as Rover, the British motor cycle industry, and many others, did. | selborne_edge
14/6/2010 13:33 | Only the brave shall win | maximillian1

13/6/2010 12:00 | From Mail on Sunday: Walsh wins, say dejected BA cabin staff By Tom McGhie, Mail on Sunday Senior Financial Correspondent "Demoralised British Airways cabin crew believe the airline's tough chief executive Willie Walsh has won the battle over working conditions and perks. They do not expect to be able to secure support for another strike. The growing mood of disenchantment among cabin crew comes as the Unite union slows down the balloting process. Union sources indicated it could take weeks before another ballot was held. The union's lawyers are concerned about the wording of any new ballot. The key issue is the company's determination to remove travel perks from strikers. But any attempt to ballot over that issue could lead to legal challenges as travel perks are not part of employment contracts. A victory for Walsh would be well received in the City. The latest series of 22 days of strikes is understood to have cost BA about £150 million. There are also concerns among some cabin crew that some of those voting for strike action have not actually joined the walkouts. One union source said: 'Gatwick Airport seemed to be working during the strike, but we know some people there voted for strike action.' The union claimed that in recent weeks 60 crew members had been suspended from work and eight sacked, mainly for trivial reasons. BA insists it is duty-bound to follow its disciplinary code. Meanwhile, airlines were criticised by consumer groups for breaching European Union regulations by forcing tens of thousands of customers to wait two months for refunds after flights were cancelled because of the volcanic ash chaos. Under European Regulation 261, airlines are supposed to give passengers their cash back within seven days if flights are delayed or cancelled." | bartram
12/6/2010 12:45 | Trouble in the ranks: | bartram
11/6/2010 21:49 | Many other airlines employ cabin crew which are far superior to those you find in BA. BA stewards just do not compare favourably with those employed by Singapore Air. BA has to lower its costs if it is to survive. | selborne_edge
11/6/2010 12:05 | No one forces her...exactly. That is why she declined as she can earn the same amount gardening. Are you suggesting that BA should rely on people looking for a vocation. Many of the people turning upto work are earning more than my wife was offered. The point I am making is that if BA continue to offer the same contracts they will not attract quality staff. Also you may get quick turn round going to Florida but not in certain parts fo the world where BA only operate two flights a week or similar. | buzzzzzzzz
11/6/2010 11:42 | Still it doesn't matter as around 8000-9000 crew were still turning up for work during the strike. | anotherguru
11/6/2010 11:33 | Buzzzzzzzzz- The job should be a vocation with a contract that is fair to both parties. No one forces your wife to don a BA uniform and eat sardines and cous cous, but I am sure it is preferable to working in a factory on a production line or travelling to an office everyday with that 9 to 5 syndrome. Some people are naturally cut out for certain types of jobs otherwise why did she apply ? I am also sure (like many cabin crew of B.A. and other airlines) she is well presented and glamourous with a confidant approach to customers. I am sure the sardines and cous cous are part of a natual high protein diet that just adds to her lovely figure. | chancer |
