Fuel fixing happened before Willie Walsh joined.
" BA had already been fined a total of around $550 million by British and U.S. authorities for colluding on fuel surcharges between August 2004 and January 2006"

Willie Walsh became CEO October 2005.

and it was a $550 million fine.

BTW it is only due to the outdated way that Ba LHR operates due to past agreements that long haul crews out of Heathrow end up staying so long away.
Lgw barely get a full day rest if they fly to Florida/ Carribean - fly in, barely 24 hours then fly out. (I think some duties i.e to ST Lucia are longer but they have to also do a shuttle flight whilst there)

LGW Crews show mixed flying can be done. also i expect many crew from other airlines would still jump at the chance to earn what you quote above and still provide a better service than some of the more militant "quick to the bunks" crews!

I have edited after mis reading some of buzzzz post.

These strikers are so deperate to get their non contractual perks back by any means that they do not realise they can never hold anyone to ransom.

On the other hand, the genuine employees of B.A. from ground crew to pilots are in a far better position as future employable proof.

Unfortunatley, a leopard does not change its spots and that will be their own downfall. Maybe, the unions can find them a job within their own structure, or maybe not.

Their own Paranoia will be enough to self destruct their own lives.

Birds of a feather flock together.

Fortunately it just a matter of time before the cabins crews realise that they are fighting a lost cause because Willie knows that BA has to win this dispute. The real concern is the future prospects for BA; the damage done to the reputation of BA by UNITE an BASSA is incalcuable.

We can but hope that BA will recover.

cheers drewz, from the article

"It is just as well Mr Walsh loves his job. His pay package might be many times that of cabin crew but he ranks at the back of the pack compared with some of his rivals.
Mr Walsh received a salary of £674,000 last year, or 11 months pay after forfeiting a salary last July as part of belt-tightening in the recession.

Mr Walsh also turned down a £334,000 bonus, for the second year running.

The BA pay committee, led by Jim Lawrence , also lifted the maximum bonus threshold for Mr Walsh to 100 per cent of his salary from 75 per cent last year.

By way of comparison, departing EasyJet chief executive Andy Harrison last year collected a £1m bonus on top of a £600,000 salary, plus a controversial £1.2m "golden carrot" to extend his stay at the discount airline group."

and doesn't take a bonus this year again. What a great CEO BA have.

Walsh incentives
By Emiliya Mychasuk and Emiko Terazono

Published: June 11 2010 03:00 | Last updated: June 11 2010 03:00

The British Airways board is tired enough of the strike action to give Mr Walsh an incentive to "improve industrial relations" as one of his performance targets for 2010.

It won't be long now before he's dumped overboard.

Uniona do not manufacture anything, provide service to industry or customer services.

They do not even sell anything tangible or life enhancing.

Instead, they instill "fear" into the workers from a labourer on a building site through to the cleaner of the office to the collection of domestic waste and the services of the public transport.

The "fear" that you will be manipulated by your employor is enough to convince you that "You Need A Union to Look after Your Welfare" and help you get the proper wage rises you deserve, the recognition for your work and of course "Peace of Mind".

After all, you do not have a mind of your own and you need your "Union" to protect you from these unscupulous Companies.

You were Intelligent enough to go for the job you wanted, pleased when you got short listed for the interview and ecstatic and proud to wear the uniform or drive that company car when you got your dream job.

You "felt the fear" and done it all by yourself with a proudness that instilled confidance in you, your friends, family and loved ones.

Why then do you do all that hard work for yourself and hand over your life to the "Unions" ???

Think about it, sleep on it and look who is actually conning you. Without your subscription they cannot survive, manipulate, destroy and prosper.

exbacrew

yes, we know he wants to destroy the union and we wish him all the best in his moral struggle against the forces of intimidation

like the NUM before them they believe they have a divine right to employment. they don't

welcome to the real world

Unions perform the greatest of all con-tricks on their members. they convince them they can make time stand still and protect them from the ravages of competition and the eternal search for profit. Union members, because they are sheepish and stupid, fall for it everytime

The unions agreed to little more than a two year loan (after famously voting at sandown to "no negotiation"). The recent revised offer was rejected by the union membership, I think BA should screw the diminishing BASSA membership into the ground.

actually you are the ultimate idiot here.
how many times you need to be told and get into your thick head THAT BA IS NOT HOLDING THIS BACK !
the unions keep saying 'travel perks'..... well its not just that.
do you really think thats the ONLY ONE sticking point.
Union are asking for travel perks AND other agreements WITH IT !
WW has said so many times.
if it was just that, then they cannot strike anymore, cos they would have diverted away from their original demands. unions know it, they're well and truly shafted themselves.
WW is playing the right cards and has my FULL BACKING !

enough, now get back to your day job !

No, the bottom line is that a Company, Organisation and Shareholders should not be allowsd to be intimidated by thugs hiding behind their power to the people attitude, disguised as "Unions"

Would they like it if there lives were intercepted and their every move, expense, conversation, day to day private life was commented about what they should be doing ?

They would seek out privacy laws to fight back and say they are being targeted.

Unfortunatly, unions are like a cancer that have infiltraed all areas of our lives at "every" employable position including Police and Civil Servants who should really be protecting the Countries interests and not their own as and when it suits them.

The bottom line is that BA has to cut costs. This is just not an optional extra, the survival of the airline depends on becoming competitive with the likes of RyanAir. We all know that UNITE and its component BASSA want to see BA collapse but what about the other BA employees. Dont they have a right to be employed !

Something's going to have to give soon in this dispute, despite Walsh's bellicose buffoonery and wish to keep it going "as long as it takes":

British Airways is braced for a summer of strikes as the latest wave of walkouts by cabin crew draws to a close today, with a senior pilot warning that the failure to end the dispute has created "unsustainable" working conditions.

and:

The pilot writes: "No one stands to gain from prolonging this dispute – chief executives and their senior management rarely survive in posts for long after a bitter strike; unions lose the ability to negotiate effectively until their members have recovered, passengers suffer lower standards and less choice, and shareholders suffer diminished returns. Other employee groups suffer from a weakened employer, poisoned workplace relationships and constant criticism of their company from outsiders."

UNITE and the Cabin Crews have only one objective and that is the demise of BA. Once achieved UNITE will select the next British company to destroy. Lets hope that Willie will stand firm. If he is successful, he will certainly deserve a bonus.

Loyalty and Dedication to the Company. Something you would not normally see in any sector.

I wonder if Woodley and his cronies will turn down their bonus ?

Walsh continues to be stupidly rewarded by BA for destroying the quality of service BA offers to the flying public and turning BA into a corporate basket case.

The board really have lost the plot.

British Airways CEO turns down 6-figure bonus
(AP) – 31 minutes ago

LONDON - British Airways' chief executive Willie Walsh has turned down a six-figure bonus for the second year as the carrier struggles with losses and a series of strikes by cabin crew.

The airline said in its annual report published Thursday that Walsh was eligible for bonus in the form of shares worth 334,000 pounds ($487,000) but he thought it was appropriate to say no.

Walsh also gave up a month's pay last year, cutting his annual compensation to 674,000 pounds.
