Should have posted it in full mitch101 .....It answered your own question...

For the Group to sit back and see what develops is not an optionand will leave us exposed to the whim of Government and the willingness of the Big Six to deliver a smart meter rollout at scale and speed. Accordingly, the Group is currently working with an experienced retail player to establish a new energy supplier that will enter the market at scale.

This project brings together all aspects of the Group - meter supply and installation; DC/DA; industry interaction; trading software and services; CRM and billing services and further demonstrates the rationale for the acquisition of Utiligroup. Our relationship with Samsung C&T is also valuable to this initiative as it will help to provide the new entrant with a fully funded solution for the installation of smart meters across its portfolio of customers.

Takeatip................Funny, I thought they are looking to get away from meter installs and become a Supplier?
From the last RNS 08.11.11:
Against this backdrop it became clear that the Group's previous strategy of working with the Big Six to secure a large contract to install and read smart meters was no longer the way forward................................

Smart meters are the key enabler for accessing the data needed to offer energy efficiency services but the value lies beyond the meter.

There are circa 60,000 faulty meters for these to change. Should be a nice little earner.

With no new contracts won, they will look to cost cutting for savings and making money.

Been watching these drop for months I saw large volume on Monday and bought 20,000 more on Tues. Results due on 12th December, IMO long term these should come good. Short term a bounce in store. Any one any opinions on a bigger energy company buying them out??

The worry is also they expect the 2014 roll out to be put back. Worry for those that need to fit meters anyway.

I find these two things sum it up.....

"For example, we no longer have engineers working in vans, so we save some money in things like petrol and road tax."

The report also said the markets in which the group operates are evolving and this has resulted in a need to fundamentally change the way it wins work and who its customers are.

They are going to create be a supplier so they can install their own meters, sounds like they are unable to win work and want to create it, in a market with loads of suppliers.

Yes, they are remote reads and different tariffs for the amount of reads per day on the I&C contracts.

Another contract for competitor, can't see these taking off soon, not sure on cash flow, would difficult to raise any at this SP, still hold a few just to offset profits elsewhere. GLA

Smart metering, no reads. Perhaps a safety check every so many years.

Commercial you are talking that for the fitter then all the back room staff and the meter on top. No idea what they get paid to fit. Main thing for these I think is the cost to read.

takeatip, I have no idea how they stand.

Only that installing meters and reading them is the way to make money for companies such as bgb and sms. You need to install loads of meters to make money, say £15-20 per year rental charge to a supplier.

Then the installation cost of the meterworker and meter would be bgb, say £60?

So your talking about a good few years before your making money from that meter, and even then the customer may change supplier.

Basically, you need to install hundreds or millions of meters to make good money.

Bglobal has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KTL to provide an integrated solution for the installation of smart meters across the residential, industrial, and commercial sectors for Ireland and Northern Ireland. There are nearly two million residential electricity meters in the Republic of Ireland and around 400,000 electricity meters in the industrial and commercial sector that will need to be replaced with smart meters.

KTL Chairman Tony Killarney, notes, "The strategic alliance with Bglobal enables KTL to provide a fully integrated smart energy solution for their clients. We are extremely honored that Bglobal has chosen KTL to be its partner and we look forward to working closely with Bglobal over the coming years."

Peter Kennedy, Bglobal PLC Chairman, adds: "Bglobal has a history of innovation and entrepreneurship in its operations, and KTL is a partner we can work with who shares this ethos. The opportunities created in Ireland through this MoU are an ideal fit to our way of working, and we firmly believe that working with KTL in Ireland will drive both of our businesses forward - and be the start of a revolution in the Irish energy markets."

Earlier this year, Bglobal signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Samsung to provide a fully funded solution for the installation of smart meters across residential, industrial, and commercial sectors in the UK.

It is estimated there are 27 million residential electricity meters in the UK and approximately two million industrial and commercial electricity meters that need to be replaced with smart meters. In its Spring Package, the British government will announce the technical specification for residential meters and the timescale for the deployment.

Tim Jackson-Smith, Group Chief Executive Officer, notes, "This is a major step forward for the Group and we are extremely honored that Samsung has chosen us to be its partner to develop a solution which will help to unlock the massive potential this market has to offer. We look forward to working closely with Samsung over the coming months."

Thank you kind sir
Just for that directly I hear any news I will post it for you good people to read. I only know about the meter side though. Even that information is second hand from a friend who still fits meters for them. Thats how I knew in advance how bad the order book was.

Meters do need changing, however which company changes them is different question.

If I was one of the big six, I'd be looking for the following:

Customer Service
Standards Of Service (GOSOS)
Cost
Nationwide network of installers
Systems, including accurate meterdata
