Don't know what others think but this buyback is a bit of a disguise...instead of giving away hard cash to shareholders equivalent to 5p...as they will be buying a small amount of shares also in Pound terms only £700mln...and if most of the shares are bought around this level or higher...and how many new shares did they issue in 2020 and how many new shares will they be issuing in 2021?...what is the net gain?...to boost eps for the BOD purpose?...

Given the strength of our business, we have decided the time is right to resume capital distributions. We have today announced a total payout equivalent to 5p per share, comprising a 1p 2020 full year dividend and the intention to initiate a share buyback of up to GBP700m. We expect to comment further on capital distributions when appropriate.

One consolation today is the magical 178p support and most of the day it traded above 180p and it closed at the highest level intraday below the flatline...some strength there...maybe distribution going there or higher highs to come...

diku: I am out of HSS at 15.5. Nice and quick 25% there. Buy volume dried up a little and spread started to sting imo. Good luck if you're still riding it :

I'll put my crunchy in the fridge for a week or two...

The FTSE 100 was fighting on multiple fronts on Friday as higher bond yields started to weigh on stocks again, while blows to the economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic dragged down banks and companies exposed to aviation.

The blue-chip index fell 32 points, or 0.5%, to 6,748.

Spreadex analyst Connor Campbell said a range of factors were hitting investor confidence after US stocks pulled back from record highs in trading yesterday and macro news around the world caused concern.

‘A stumble from the Dow Jones last night, a shift in policy from the Bank of Japan, frosty words between the US and China, and a third Covid-19 wave in France all undermined sentiment this Friday,’ he said.

It has been a busy week for central bank watchers, with mixed messages now emerging.

‘Though the Federal Reserve and Bank of England made it clear they wouldn’t be turning the stimulus taps off any time soon, that hasn’t stopped the Bank of Japan’s decision to move to a more “sustainable” monetary policy from upsetting the apple cart,’ Campbell added.
