31/5/2019 08:33 | Not such a good look. "BAE executive leaves abruptly after just 12 months" Former Crossrail chief Andrew Wolstenholme departs UK’s largest defence contractor The head of BAE Systems’ naval and armoured vehicles business in the UK has left abruptly after just 12 months in the role at Britain’s largest defence contractor. In his role at BAE, he oversaw some of the company’s most high-profile UK naval programmes, including the construction of the second of the Royal Navy’s two aircraft carriers. The naval business also covers BAE’s substantial submarine business, notably Dreadnought, the programme to deliver the next-generation nuclear deterrent. A spokesman for BAE confirmed that Mr Wolstenholme had left last week for “personal reasons” but declined to provide further details. He said the company’s naval programmes were performing in line with previous guidance issued at BAE’s annual results in February. | crossing_the_rubicon

30/5/2019 10:22 | I think we're being naive if we don't realise that machine of war are built and sold for one purpose only..... Personally I've never given it a second thought as to where these machines of war are deployed. If it is not us supplying some of these nations, it would the Russians, or French, Or Americans. War and killing people is a popular pastime unfortunately. | crossing_the_rubicon

29/5/2019 12:35 | CANSEC 2019 A design based on the UK Royal Navy's (RN's) Type 26 Global Combat Ship has been selected as the basis for the Royal Canadian Navy's (RCN's) next generation of surface combatants. Selection for CSC is the second export success for BAE Systems' Type 26 design, following on from the selection last year of a Global Combat Ship variant for the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN's) Project Sea 5000 Hunter-class frigate programme. Representatives from the RN, RAN and RCN on 1 May signed a charter formally acknowledging Canada's entry into the Global Combat Ship Users Group. | ribblewader

28/5/2019 19:56 | Indeed it does, which is where I suspect semantics come into play. Back in the day when it was politically toxic for the RN to talk aircraft carriers, suddenly there was a project for ships to carry several SeaKing helicopters, which happened to have a flight deck err "through deck", so it wasn't a carrier, it was a through deck cruiser. Today the Japanese are doing something remarkably similar, only they are called Helicopter Destroyers, and the latest will be about the size and configuration of the last Ark Royal. I am willing to bet that it will have been designed to be able to operate F35B should this become relevant. It will be interesting to see what variants they go for with the additional planned orders. | shalder
28/5/2019 16:30 | shalder. I tend to agree with you. I dont think Japan will be considering mini carriers though, the Japanees constitution forbids any "strike" capability. | ribblewader
28/5/2019 15:01 | RW Many thanks for the links. I'm interested in part because the B variant might turn out to be rather more of a success story than RN + USM needs imply. To me there are increasing indicators of planners thinking of resurrecting the old Light Fleet Carrier category, which the F35B enables without the exorbitant costs of cats/traps. I will be very interested to see how the Japanese proceed in this direction. Also the use of USN Wasp etc as mini strike carriers complicates targeting for adversaries compared with only having to track a handful of CVNs. Also, I note Singapore interest in the B due to vulnerability of their runways. | shalder
28/5/2019 14:23 | shalder. Excuse the noise! The BA. web site does not clarify anything but does acknowledge it produces forall three varients. | ribblewader |
