13/3/2019 16:30 | bb. Reading the report.... RAF personnel on secondment to BAE Systems in Saudi Arabia have provided routine engineering support for UK-supplied aircraft operated by the Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF), including aircraft engaged in military operations in Yemen.” BAE may be contracted with a support contract, the RAF are not and should not be involved! I am not aware of any BAE "large numbers of employees" in the NE. Both Warton and Wharton are in the NW, only one of which is a BAE site! Which one do you refer to? The Typhoon jobs at risk have been at risk for years because Typhoon production is being run down. A Saudi order will not effect the ultimate job losses (which are likelly to have been mitigated anyway)! | ribblewader
13/3/2019 14:45 | Are they not contracted to assist the RSAF, I do not condone the bombing of innocent civilians, but this company employs a considerable number of people in this country, the ethics of any war is questionable, but I suggest that this company is our last remaining high tech defence company, and large numbers of employees in the North East rely upon their jobs in the Typhoon project. This company has already in the past considered reducing the labour force at Wharton should orders dry up, it is time that the truce in Yemen be honoured, but the Houthi’s have shown contempt for that recently! | bookbroker

07/3/2019 18:59 | NorthernHills, perhaps it is a game of catch up, but with no supply in the market for many years I don't see that as a bad thing. Why UK/EU would object, I don't know. Free market economics is good for everyone. | cmackay
07/3/2019 14:46 | Germans are an absolute disgrace, they assume to be partners, and then break ranks over ethics, absolutely in no position to dictate the terms, they should held to account for breach of agreement, many jobs depend on trade, particularly issues of national security. I understand the moral high ground, but not when it compromises outside partners within an agreement. If they wish to object to the behavior of other country’s and their actions, it should be unanimous, perhaps they should put a blanket ban on trade with the likes of Saudi via German companies alone! | bookbroker

06/3/2019 08:45 | cmackay. Looks like the Yanks trying to play catch up! Wonder what they will do if UK/EU refuses to let the thing operate in airspace controlled by Europe. Toys out of cot, Trump Tantrum at the very least! | northernhills
06/3/2019 08:02 | Farnborough Airshow public weekend axed..... This is a shame but not a shock! It will be interesting to see if its the same next year, Wad, best of luck to your son. Its a good career choice, lots of options. RW | ribblewader
05/3/2019 23:57 | Re: Concorde. That account of the original project sounded like a wonderful experience! A few years ago I was listening to radio 4 at night at work while teaching myself about investing from online resources, and I heard a story about a company aiming to bring back supersonic commercial flights, due mainly to it now being economically viable. I was trying to think of the name, and I was drawing zoom and boost, but it was right in between the two... P.S. I am sure they touted themselves as having Mach 2.6 capabilities on the radio. Of course I immediately searched the company to see if they were public, but they're private. | cmackay
05/3/2019 23:19 | Politics and the Defence Industry have always been uncomfortable bedfellows, I have a certain respect for the absolutist approach of Corbyn which would work fine if there were no nasty people, but think I would rather be in a country with the best weapon systems and keeping ahead of the dangerous regimes . Merkel doesn't seem so naive but presumably has taken that approach after careful vote assessments. Meanwhile everyone else will fill the gap. My son has a job interview with BAe tomorrow so feeling biased! | wad collector
