Groups unite to devise intelligence system to save drivers time and cut emissions

A group of organisations are developing a vehicle intelligence system that will provide hauliers with updates on the most direct route and crime hotspots.

The North Sea Freight Intelligence Transport Solution (NS FRITS) will provide live information to the mobile phones of commercial truck drivers and the PCs of their managers as they work across the North Sea region.

Organisations such as People United Against Crime, Volvo, Avanti Communications and the Dutch Police, are developing the system.

The system will provide data including traffic updates, truck-specific road conditions, secure parking locations, freight crime hotspots, foreign laws and route planning from a variety of sources and providers. The information will be available in text, graphic and map formats, using mobile, GPRS and satellite technology.

For instance, using a mobile phone, a driver would be notified when the containership carrying shipments is in port. The system then plans a route, taking into account weather, traffic incidents and crime hotspots.

En route to the container terminal, the driver receives another update when the ship has been unloaded, is then notified of the truck line to get into and is given an approximation of the length of time it will take to complete his transaction within the port, based on the current average processing times.

The system helps the driver to take the most direct route, avoiding engine idling and reducing emissions.

Development and testing of NS FRITS will be completed by 2011.

Astrium – the double prime contractor for the 54th Ariane 5 launch
22 november 2010
Hylas & Telecommunications
Astrium is the prime contractor for the HYLAS 1 satellite payload

Astrium is also responsible for Ariane 5's development and delivery

Kourou, 22 November 2010 – The Highly Adaptable Satellite (HYLAS) 1, which was designed and built by Astrium for the satellite broadband operator Avanti Communications, has been fully fuelled and integrated with the Ariane 5 launch vehicle at the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana.

HYLAS 1 is scheduled to be launched on an Ariane 5, for which Astrium is also the prime industrial contractor, on the 26th November between 6.39pm and 9.54pm GMT. The Astrium teams on site at the Guiana Space Centre are now busy with final preparations for what will be the 54th Ariane 5 launch.

HYLAS 1 will bring high-speed broadband services to remote rural areas across Europe, using its 'highly adaptable' payload, developed by Astrium, primarily at its UK sites in Portsmouth and Stevenage. The payload operating in Ku and Ka bands is designed to allocate varying amounts of power and bandwidth to the different regions within its footprint, reacting to the highs and lows of traffic demand.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in Bangalore was responsible for the HYLAS 1 platform and satellite's integration

The UK Space Agency and Technology Strategy Board have provided support for the development of HYLAS 1 through the UK subscription to the European Space Agency ARTES programme.

Astrium was selected as the sole prime contractor for Ariane 5 in 2003. Astrium Space Transportation delivers the fully assembled and tested launch vehicle to Arianespace, the commercial launch service provider. Astrium Space Transportation also supplies all the Ariane 5 stages, equipment bays, flight software and numerous sub-assemblies.

Astrium oversees the entire industrial chain and is committed to providing Arianespace, who are responsible for the commercial marketing and launch of the Ariane 5, with a launcher that offers maximum reliability. It is this unique strategy of industrial collaboration that has allowed the Group to develop such a reliable launch vehicle, which has chalked up 39 successful consecutive flights.

lots of buys in the past hour grabster, coming out of the earlier dip. No idea myself what pattern of buying/profittaking will occur between now and Monday ;o)

I don't think IC and ShMag can be relied on to help. IC i think goes to printer on Wednesday night(?) and ShMag presumably sooner - so any observations/recs they make in the printed versions will already be drafted.. I think papers like the Telegraph probably have far more influence on older private investors.

When will be
too late to buy in?

- Wait till Monday morning and there is every chance that phone lines will be clogged as they very often are on Monday mornings and online access will get diverted to phones if overloaded. So forget doing anything quickly on Monday morning.

- Friday there could be an update rec in Investors Chronicle (which I think is owned by the FT, so maybe also a rec in the weekend FT?) and that might trigger some buying Friday.

- Ditto with Shares mag on Thursday triggering buys if AVN rec updated.

Only leaves tomorrow and today.

This is a stock that can move 50p in a day when it wants to. Could be today or tomorrow. Opportunity could disappear in a matter of minutes anytime.

Recent articles in this group have covered the issues of poor broadband coverage especially in rural areas. A number of solutions are being put in place but here is one that has been overlooked for some time as being unnecessary, but looks like a real answer to the areas of Britain which are not getting the connections they need.

A new satellite is to be launched this week designed specifically to address the problem of Britain's broadband blackspots. The satellite's capacity has already been 15% "pre-let" to telecommunications providers.

The Hylas 1 satellite will have a lifespan of at least 15 years and will be launched by Avanti Communications on Friday of this week from French Guiana. It will be followed by a second satellite in 2012.

There has been much criticism of BT in recent years for their slow investment into fibre-optic cable to replace the old copper system (Fibre optic runs 20 times faster), however they are currently investing £2.5 billion to cover two-thirds of the country by 2015. BT is also working on partnerships with Regional Development Agencies to share the investment costs in other areas. Experts have calculated that satellite broadband could then hook up the remaining 10% of the population in areas where it is uneconomical set up new networks.

We are getting plenty of good publicity at the moment Scott but I guess new investors are waiting to see it operating in space before buying in. A lot of upside will be missed by then in my opinion....although there will a lot more to follow I'm quite sure

sunday times article p3

a satellite designed to plug britains broadband black spots will blast into space this week. Avanti Communications launches hylas 1 in french giuana on friday, promising to offer high speed internet access to rural parts of the nation that Bt. and Virgin do not reach.

the launch marks a 10 year labour of love for david williams, a former investment banker who is chief executive of the satellite operator. "five years ago. everyone thought that this was a silly idea and not worth is, now people realise we were right."

the satellite has already pre let 13% of its capacity to businesses, mobile phone operators and internet service providers who will sell access at a minimum speed two mb a second for £25 a month.

bt is investing 2.5 billion to install fibre optic wires, which run 20 times faster, to cover two thirds of the country by 2015. beyond that, it is striking partnerships with regional development agencies to share the cost of investment, analysts believe satellite broadband could hook up 10% of the populations in areas where it is uneconomical to expand next gen networks.

Hylas 1 has a life span of at least 15 years. A second satellite will follow in the first half of 2012. Avanti picked up the satellite licence for nothing. it was used by british satellite broadcasting to transmit sqaurial tv dishes but was handed back to the government in 1990 when bsb merged with sky, now 39% owned by news corp, owner of the sunday times.

Hopes f success have lifted avantis share price 50% in a year, giving a 520 million market cap.

Depends on what you mean carried away !

With Hylas1 launched and operating to spec and a few more contracts signed then one will have plenty to be upbeat about wendsworth......

I guess you need something in your glass to realise it is half full and not half empty

2. the company will be considering raising additional cash for future launches ..which could severely dilute holdings

3. MMS will be looking to make a fast buck ..either way!

4. there is likely to be a 'deafeningly quiet pause'...before all the technical launch aspects are known

All holders need to be patient and careful is my advice.

Aplogies for the split post!
