01.04.14 URI acquired National Pump who supply pumps to the gas and oil industry.
This would seem to be the problem for URI but why it should effect AHT is beyond me.

United Rentals Completes Acquisition of National Pump

Becomes the second largest pump rental provider in North America

Expands specialty rental business and supports strategic focus on high-margin, high-return assets

United Rentals, Inc. (NYSE:URI) today announced that it has completed its previously announced acquisition of National Pump1 for a combined asset purchase price of approximately $780 million.

The purchase price was comprised of approximately $765 million in cash, funded through newly issued unsecured debt, and approximately $15 million in stock. The transaction structure also provides for additional cash consideration based on the achievement of certain financial targets. The stock consideration has been granted as awards to certain new employees in the form of unregistered restricted shares. The total number of unregistered restricted shares of the company’s common stock was 153,619.2

The acquisition makes United Rentals the second largest provider of pump rentals in North America, a sector characterized by rapid growth and superior margins. The assets acquired include 37 branch facilities operating in the United States and Canada.

'The firm cited a Q4 construction equipment dealer survey that indicated the sharp decline in oil and commodity prices will adversely impact energy investments, and thus construction.'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I understand the oil price adversely impacting energy investments and construction related to energy but not if the construction is unrelated to energy.

1100 also provides a support albeit just one bounce off it in recent weeks. Personally a 250 point drop from recent high would see me buying strongly.

Good day Disco

Even AHT unable to avoid the market antics and a chunky gap to fill.

It will do well if it avoids dropping to 1000 and maybe to the Daily SMA 200 currently at 964.

I have the Weekly uptrend line at 950 which is just below the Daily SMA 200. A drop to this zone is a fair probability.

Unfortunately I have not traded much since mid December due to other commitments.

Thanks James97. So say shale sector scales back 20%, that might impact on 2% of Sunbelt's business which is not all of AHT's interests. Seems a 9% drop is excessive!

About 10% of Sunbelt's business relates to the shale oil sector. The question was raised in the presentation after the results.

Appears that Evercore in USA downgraded an AHT competitor, United Rentals Inc, to sell, citing effect of oil plunge on construction there.

Does AHT have a large exposure to that industry? The company made no reference to oil-related issues on 10th December when they guided higher.

AHT does its business in Uncle Sam's backyard. Hence the afternoon rise as American funds piled in (perhaps on the broker upgrade) even as the Dow tanked after slipping on Oil and Greece.

The market is running scared because of Greece.

AHT sails through it all like a graceful swan.

I understand your point re: satisfaction! But I guess I'm satisfied, my profits now outweigh my losses of years ago. That said,, I tried to lock in some profits some time ago, only to watch them soar onwards! I suppose I should have more of 'a plan'!

Been out most of the day, so don't know what's been causing the fluctuations with AHT.....that said, I'm not sure I'd have been any the wiser if I'd been online watching all day!

I checked before going out, my portfolio mostly blue, AHT up 26p. Early afternoon, checked and my portfolio mainly red, AHT only 5p up. Got home, red still had the advantage, but AHT up 21p!

Oh well, time to fess up to HL. Just briefly I appeared to be a successful trader!

It's a point of honour between AHT and I. I will have satisfaction!

It's odd. '0' is zero but it can make such a difference.......typical AHT trick!

I was looking at my watch list earlier, every one of them was down bar one guess which.

Back to the desks and analysts looking again at those storming results of the 12th Dec.

Panmure now says TP 1457. Havn't checked if this posted before but its worth repeating.

Bracke, it's not always good to dwell on the past. I lost a shedload on AHT when they disclosed financial irregularities years ago, and the price plummeted, I vowed never to come back. Eventually i did, and it's probably been my most successful investment.

Btw, I did txfr my stocks to HL. Imagine my brief shock when I discovered the shares had arrived, and I had about £400k more than I expected! My AHT holding had an extra 0 on my holding. I'm out currently, and will contact them on my return to rectify matters. 😥

I can be vulgar..........if there's a profit in it!

I do find the 'academic' side interesting.

AHT and I have a 'history'. It done me wrong so it's personal.

This share does like to draw in shorters and then it turns nasty and rips them to bits.

It is my bete noir but one day...............

As an elite guru I assume you are an academic and above vulgar commensalism, who's dream is to short AHT successfully just to prove it can be done.

Good day fenners

2014 FTSE -183 DOW +1246.

Bearing in mind something like 95% of the profit comes from the US the FTSE is unlikely to have much impact on the share price

There has not been a reversal on the DOW, although it may be argued that the fall in October came close but it did not follow through. It has been a succession of higher highs and higher lows.

Until there is a series of lower highs and lower lows there is no reversal.

As for "raging bulls" the DOW appears to be doing a fair impression of one.

"Hot air and hype" seems very similar to QE and share buybacks to bolster SPs' because the earnings are too low to achieve it own their own.

I don't know when the reversal will come but I think you know as well as I that it will.

Bracke: "At some point the market will reverse and when the decline gathers momentum the good go with the bad."

Well the FTSE declined 200 points in 2014 so isn't that a market that has already reversed?
Its hardly the trend of a raging bull market.
Which is fine by me as it would seem less like hot air and hype.

Some may find the chart below of interest.

The upper green horizontal line is a support zone with another below. If they fail to support there is a good probability of the price dropping to the lower of the three parallel red lines.

If support holds and price rises the target would be the middle of the three parallel green lines.

It's probably fair to say that interest rate will determine price direction.

The US $ gained about 2 c on the £ today and what was it £4m extra £ profit per c?
Well that could add £80m to our valuation then.
I guess as trade in the USA continues to grow that £4m per c will increase as well.
