Why is 'our' company so quiet? Maybe I'm just impatient but the amount of (potentially, I suppose!) 'good' news in the pipeline, I'd have thought they would be more vocal...

I get a little antsy in quarantine and start questioning.

Matt

On the US debt clock on the right hand side it shows the USD to gold ratio above $20,000 per ounce. In 1913 it was $28 per ounce.

Very interesting stats Matt. Is gold already 80% mined out?

Polaris I agree it would make sense for AAZ to publish targets and production of each metal separately.

For me, GEOs can be binned. They're meaningless when there's a large divergence of gold and copper prices.

When AAZ announced 2019 production would be at the bottom end of GEO targets, the share price dropped sharply.

Most on this BB recognized that missing the GEO target due to a high gold price was good news. It meant AAZ would be more profitable than if they smashed the GEO target, due to a low gold price. The market didn't notice this.

To be fair, as 2sp points out, the company learnt from this and make a clearer breakdown of metals now. In a way that's a disadvantage for us on this BB, as we briefly had an edge vs the market.

There are reportedly US$37Trn in circulation in the world as at start of 2020. That is all physical monies of all denominations in the world in peoples pockets, bank accounts etc (rather more of late!)

if you take 37Trn and divide it by that same number of ounces Gold on planet earth you get:

37,000,000,000,000 / (32,150*250,000) = $4,603

So, on some very, very basic maths, it does seem to me that Gold is currently trading less than 50% of its 'proper' value

but … only 200,000t has been found and mined to date. the other 50,000t is still somewhere in the ground and yet to be mined so, if we redo that sum according to above ground gold that may theoretically be disbursed, we get

37,000,000,000,000 / (32,150*200,000) = $5,754

It's when you do these sort of sums that you get a true picture of just how rare Gold is and just how it's price per ounce will inevitably go up as more and more $'s are created by Central Banks. Does not matter if we get Deflation or Inflation, the simple mathematics of fiat currency & its creation v Gold is inescapable

2sp - i know. I've been in and out of AAZ since 2010. The way the market misrepresents and misunderstands the figures is mind boggling. I have a few others like that where the market gets fixated on the headline loss, which is only a loss due to accounting write-downs. The revenues and cash pile have been steadily building, showing the operations are fine, but the market just didn't see it, or refused to see it.

GEO here is a bit of a nightmare TBH. Why not just quote ranges for production of each of gold, copper and silver? You can 'almost' ignore the silver as it's about 1 k oz gold equivalent at current prices. Converting to GEO just confuses 'simple' people...yes, I am not all that PC. Not my fault if they can't read a balance sheet properly, but it can impact a small cap quite significantly when the majority of free float is in the hands of the 'simple' brigade. :-/

I'd like to think that most/all posters here are above that level. ;-)

Gold is still within spitting distance of recent ATH's in GBP, EUR, CHF, CAD, AUD, CNY, BRL
Closed today at new ATH in RUB

Doesn't really matter if it's deflationary or inflationary outlooks that are being glimpsed by investors, the reality is that ALL fiat currencies are being printed in vast quantities but the central banks cannot print any more Gold. There is only a finite quantity of gold on this planet & it cannot be created/conjured up out of thin air.
Unless / until such time as man starts to mine for gold on another planet or re-create the forces at work during planetary formations, we are stuck with this finite quantity of Gold on planet earth - circa 250,000t in total (mined and yet to be mined)

With a global population of 8Bn people that coincidentally works out as follows:

32,150 (troy oz in a tonne) * 250,000t divided by 8Bn = 1.0045oz / person

Would you believe it that a barrel of oil contains 159 litres of oil. Being at $13 a barrel at present would make it under 9c a litre. No wonder Americans can drive around in big v8 engine cars. Who needs tesla at that price. Obviously they are probably paying 50c a litre at forecourt.

Yes, well the situation wrt GEO actuals coming in below GEO target on account of gold:Copper price ratio rising cropped up for the first time last year when the Q4/H1 results RNSs came out.
The significant drop in the GEO actuals v Target was indeed poorly received at first.
AAZ didn't highlight how, as the POG had risen, [cannot recollect OTH what the POC did though vaguely recall it dipped] Revenue and cashflow were up all the more for it. Bear in mind the H1 av. sales price was something close to $1330/oz, well up on 2018 but seems oh so low now.

More than this, they didn't mention in their RNSs that the total gold production target for 2019 had been jacked up a few $k-oz to compensate for lower than targeted output of copper due to a temporary problems with low grades [mostly] and also difficulties in the flotation processing leading to drop in % cu extracted from ore.
That all came out in a Presentation available on their website, followed by an interview with Bill Morgan. You needed to take both on board to get the full picture.

[My recollection of share price action back then is hazy other than it became very buoyant during Q3 [177-9p max] on account of speculations about a takeover of assets by Azerzi Guvmint or PSA extensions + Q3 sales price for gold was $1513/oz as i recall.]

AAZ seemed to learn from that and subsequent production RNSs have promoted the discrete physical outputs of the 3 metals, along with the GE total, and highlighted the dore. The GE 'performance' has been both explained and put into context.
More than this, there has been a focus on the money - the Revenue, cashflow, cash, debt paydown and indeed prospects for the divi.
