Spud Well, at least a life jacket on a camel would make for an interesting photo op. A broker note, on the other hand, is about as exciting as watching paint dry... in black and white.

And as we all have learnt over the decades, a broker note is about as useful as a life jacket on a camel.spud

Right, I've switched the laptop off and on again a couple of times but no matter WHAT I do it still seems like an upgrade ;-)

Having had two CEO's in the past (and not for the price of one mind) they are perhaps trying a minimalist approach.

Buy backs are appropriate in some circumstances

But all too often they are used to prop up a share price so certain criteria can be fulfilled thus ensuring that the powers that be get their extra bonuses triggered when a share price is maintained at certain levels.

Abdn is a case in point the shareholders have been shafted while the board of directors have rewarded themselves at our expense.

Far better for that money to have been used to bolster the dividend and maybe just maybe the share price would not be in the situation it finds itself.

Douglas Flint has been at the head of this firm while it has lurched from one disaster to another.

When will Douglas Flint and the BOD accept their abject failure to lead and do the hounarable thing and resign.

After this latest set of results I feel a corner may have been turned but it is going to be a long hard road back to where some investors are marooned.

But they need to get rid of the dead wood and the removal of Flint could be the 'Spark' that is needed.

If I remember correctly a share buyback brought the share price up to 237 after the II purchase sent the share price to their all time lows.

Anyway in light of current situation will be looking to add but early days still.

Long time to St Ledger

Stop the buybacks.
Use the money to invest in US stocks instead.

kenmitch: Only if you can say what the price would have been had there been no buy backs... 😀😀😀

Bottom line less people are investing in FTSE and more in the US (and elsewhere). Unless buy backs take place UK shares would almost certainly have fallen a lot more.

Well done buy backs. Phew.

thebutler.

ABDN have been buying back their shares for over 5 years with those buybacks starting at £5. The share price is now 70% lower at £1.50.

Can you explain please why you think those buybacks worked?

I must ask: why do you refer to me as 'macca' thebutler?

My Handle is MCunliffe1. I don't hide behind a pseudonym, nor use my profession as a handle. I'm not Scottish, although worked there quite a bit and holidayed at the Standard Life staff 'resort' in Peebles many a summer as a child - hence love the country.

I have no link to Paul McCartney (Macca) either - but I've often been told I'm a looky likey for Eric Clapton.

Curious.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, macca, and it's all very well highlighting the "high" share price during the last buyback but it was still well below the NAV and seemed a bargain at the time. Who knows, without the buyback the current share price could be 120p?

I've explained before that buybacks are akin to repaying debt, and with the current yield at almost 10% which is also not tax deductible, it's equivalent to repaying a gross loan of 13%.

Investing that money elsewhere does not even guarantee a positive return, never mind one of 13%, whereas a buyback GUARANTEES a gross equivalent saving of (currently) 13%.

So that's my argument as to why the current share price warrants a buyback. Would also put a squeeze on those evil shorters!
