Dont know if this has been posted before: article from the US on VRFB from John Lee, CEO of Prophesy Development, an Ontario-based Vanadium miner. Looks like there could be a squeeze on Vanadium if all these guys get into VRFB

A new renewable energy project consisting of a 500kW single wind turbine, 670kWp solar panel array and 500kW energy storage facility is being proposed in Powys. REG Power Management has brought in the expertise of planning consultancy Engena to provide the EIA and associated ES. Consultation is currently underway via www.cefnymaes.co.uk, with a planning application due to be submitted in February.

India’s electricity access challenge is formidable. About 300 million people lack electricity, while an additional 100 million have less than 4 hours of electricity per day, and possibly several million more suffer from unreliable supply. Population growth and an increase in electricity demand each year could further strain the grid.

Despite the scale of the challenge, the Government of India has committed to supplying electricity to all villages by May 2018, and to provide 24-7 power to all households by 2019. Unlike previous targets, this time around, there seems to be more excitement and belief that the targets might indeed be achievable.

Farms make the ideal place for storage and provide extra income for the farmers.

Newbald Lodge is a modern arable farming enterprise growing produce for the UK and overseas. Boston Renewables were contacted by Newbald Lodge in early 2012 with an interest in reducing their carbon footprint and generating green power for use within their farming business.

Challenge
The farmstead at Newbald Lodge has an annual requirement for approximately 330,000kWh of grid supplied electricity to condition and store arable produce and seed potatoes.
The challenge was simple: to offset as much of the farm’s requirements for grid supplied electricity as possible.

Solution
Boston Renewables installed a Solar PV system that generates over 40,000kWh of electricity per year. This was followed by the installation an Endurance E-3120 wind turbine which produces approximately 200,000kWh annually, thanks to one of the best wind speed sites in East Yorkshire.
The combination of solar and wind technologies, together generating over 240,000kWh of electricity, are ideally suited to reduce the consumption of grid supplied electricity at Newbald Lodge.

fter a period of setbacks and uncertainty, the energy storage industry is on the cusp of major growth – with farmers leading the way. Katie Kozlowska, head of the energy and utilities team at Harrison Drury, examines the opportunities.

The energy storage sector is finally demonstrating its enormous potential as a profitable farm diversification option.

More than 3,000 farmers and landowners attended the recent Energy Now Expo, where they were told that 2016 is expected to prove a breakthrough year for energy storage technologies.

Farmers can finally expect to reap what they have sown

More and more farmers who previously developed solar farms are now turning to large battery storage facilities.

These are becoming known as ‘energy barns’ – locations where energy can be stored on farms and exported to the grid, which will pay significant returns for providing storage services.

The adoption of large-scale renewable energy has brought with it a range of challenges for the grid operator to manage such volumes of intermittent generation. Energy storage is a complementary technology that works alongside renewables to meet these challenges.

The UK is poised for an energy storage revolution with large-scale deployment required to support the UK energy market. For an investor, energy storage provides the opportunity to deploy capital into a growth sector which benefits from strong government support and provides multiple long-term revenue streams. Camborne has taken its project development experience in the UK energy market to structure a robust investment opportunity.

Last fall, the U.K. government reached out to players across the electricity industry for suggestions on how to reform the grid. Now industry observers are expecting the country’s energy storage market to take a major leap forward if legislation is enacted this spring.

The U.K. is set to become “the world’s best market for scaling up storage,” said Simon Daniel, CEO of energy storage developer Moixa.

“There’s a perfect storm on its way,”

thanks to a combination of new government promotion programs, a deregulated electricity market and a high adoption of solar, said Daniel.

The legislative changes should be implemented after the government finishes mulling over the results of a recent industry consultation on how to make the grid smarter and more flexible.

Energy storage a new option for farmers, says legal expert By shropshirelive.com - February 22, 2017 Storing electricity is a new land of opportunity for farmers despite the practice being something of a “postcode lottery”, according to a legal expert in Shropshire.

David Brammer, a planning specialist from Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors, was speaking following a major energy conference in Telford which attracted industry leaders, farmers and landowners from across the region. He said that one key message from the Energy Now expo was that energy storage as well as generation provided more options for farmers looking to diversify. “A lot of the talk at the conference was about the challenge of how renewable energy generation can remain profitable despite the subsidy regime being cut,” David said. “As lawyers, we deal with a variety of farmers and landowners looking to use their land for renewable energy projects, and we appreciate the complexities involved. “Storing energy is now a major growth area and you can see the attractiveness, because of course much of the power generated by renewable energy – solar in particular – is only available at certain times “By developing energy storage schemes, farmers and landowners can either store the power to use themselves or put it back into the national grid when it is needed.”

I wonder who will be tendering for this.....vanadium flow battery storage system

Title: Battery storage system at Ysgol Abermorddu
Published by: Flintshire County Council
Publication Date: 28/02/2017
Deadline Date: 28/03/2017
Deadline Time: 15:00
Notice Type: Contract Notice
Has Documents: No
Abstract: The works shall consist of a full turnkey solution including the design, supply, installation, connection, commissioning and handover of a liquid vanadium flow battery storage system for the storage of existing solar generation, when solar generation is in excess of school demand. This will also include, but should not be limited to, the provision of all civil works, trenching, fencing, and connection to the main distribution board. The battery will be discharged overnight using stored solar generation (i.e. time shifting) for use by the school and will not be charged via grid supplied electricity unless there is a shortfall in stored electricity and grid electricity is deemed necessary to complete the charge. Off grid operation is not required.
This project is subject to planning approval being granted and the contractor will be required to provide design drawings and associated information to be submitted with the planning application. No formal contract will be signed until planning permission has been granted.

Harmony Energy Storage has been founded to develop and operate a portfolio of utility-scale battery energy storage systems across the UK to provide a range of grid balancing services to National Grid.

National Grid has a license obligation to control the frequency of the Grid within the limits set out by the Electricity Supply Regulations. It must limit fluctuations within +/- 1% of the 50.00Hz nominal system frequency through continuously managing supply and demand – whilst ensuring the security and quality of electricity supply across the GB Transmission System at all times.

UK utility National Grid is opening up the tender process to allow smaller companies and non-traditional energy storage methods to compete in the grid-scale UK market.

Work on the new proposal is ongoing, with National Grid planning to announce more details in its Electricity Future Operability Strategy document at the end of March.

The U.K. government is on the verge of making structural changes to the energy market that will benefit storage

David Capper, deputy director and head of future electricity networks at the U.K.’s newly created department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), has expressed the need to encourage markets for flexibility services.

Removing the regulatory barriers for storage are a major priority for BEIS, Capper said. He also believes developers should be allowed to stack revenues.

dlg3: "near" is a relative term. So IEH have announced this big order (600 batteries) but dont we need RED to announce these sort of orders too?

From their press release:
"
The first order of 600 units is to integrate Intelligent Energy's low power 1kW Fuel Cell Modules (FCM) into Luxfer-GTM's Zero-Set Lite portable, zero-emission light towers and will also see Intelligent Energy mobilise its global network to assist sales of Luxfer-GTM's products internationally.
"
dlg3 I am a holder in RED but I am thinking of buying some IEH too. What do you think? To me 600 units sounds a lot (perhaps I'm naive). Would you touch it with a barge pole?
