If only it were that simple, MrP. Lots of shares might do well. International could do well since China is booming again. They sold 28m of the world's 77m new cars last year. Thw world's largest car market is booming. What will that do to international stocks?

Morning All.

Thought this damn cough was finally showing signs of disappearing after a month, but I have had a relapse and now come out in a bit of a stinking cold as well, which I had avoided so far. Not helped by the -1.7°C I was faced with at 6:30 this morning when I checked the mouse traps in the shed! No takers, but the wildlife camera confirmed we still have visitors but I'm not sure what they will eat now we've moved all the dahlias and begonias into the garage!

Aleman, will we come to regret not selling up ready for the fall, or is it just a case of accepting we're likely to have a turbulent time of it this year?

Profit warnings getting worse? Pearson, Mitie and Premier Foods today. Perhaps a mild one from Wetherspoons - sales weaken a touch and caution about next year's costs. (Read Tim Martin's moan on Europe.) Burberry joined Tiffany's in reporting US sales falls. How can so may US retailers report falling sales yet US growth be normal? How can stockmarkets keep marching up with so much bad news about that wasn't there when indices were lower?

I'm down -1.218% on teh day (FTSE100 -+1.457%).

Worst falls: S32 -4.4%, BATS -3.8% and BLT -2.9%.

Best rises: TW. +2.3%, LLOY +1.2% and MKS +1.1%.

I liked Theresa May's speech. Miners and oils suffered, which may be down to the rise of sterling against the USD. Predictable responses from the usual suspects.

Washing machine has decided to give trouble today. The on/off switch would not stay on, so I did a little Dutch boy trick with my finger on the button until it had gone through most of the spin cycle. I'm waiting to hear if a repair is possible, but I suspect that a new machine will be the answer. I think that we have had this one for the best part of 20 years.

-1°C this morning, with scattered bits of cloud. A nice sunset and the prospect of lower temperature tomorrow. Bonnet and Shawl time.

Right, good interview of Trump by Gove yesterday in the Times.
Good brexit speach by May today.
£ up, market down.
I actually question whether the 100 has really broken out. On an intraday basis it only got a little bit above its previous intraday high.

I feel quite good, but am sneezing like its Hay fever time or worse, temperature, a degree below normal.

PS. Mr Phil needs to go out and buy some $ & Euro.

We saw a high of 6.5°C yesterday dropping to a chilly low of 1.9°C early this morning.

The change in vehicle excise duty is going to cause some excitement once people realise what's happening. As part of the plan to encourage lower emission vehicles, is it not strange that the highest polluting cars will actually be taxed less under the new system?! And the daftest thing yet, luxury zero emission cars will actually pay MORE!

"For all cars under £40,000 with emissions over 141g/km, the annual charge will be lower under the new system, so once someone else has paid the first year’s higher charge, you could save money immediately by buying a car that’s taxed under the new system.

-0.7% for me. Probably not a bad result on a day like today.

Another damp grey day only not quite so much - still horrible. Makes your chest hurt if you have a cold, although it might only be psychologocal. It was a touch warmer at 6.4C, after a low of 4.0C. Going through hour by hour, the Met Office is forecasting a bit of partially sunny weather to come - but not until Monday! I do hope they are wrong.

That earlier gain soon disappeared but I guess it could have been worse. SIPP -0.28% BP., BRCI & GSK and the pot -0.14% AMS, FFY & RDSB

Part 2 of this weeks Silent Witness postponed until tomorrow due to the football, so we'll catch up on Endeavour instead.

You're welcome, MrP.

Why was hard Brexit bad for the £ and good for the FTSE100 but now it's good for the £ and bad for the FTSE100 !?

Zopa's projected default rate for 2016-originated loans has risen again. At 4.01%, it is closing in on its 2008 high of 4.25%.

The Bank of England report rising personal and corporate default rates in Q4. Mortgage availability shrank for the 4th consecutive quarter so one wonders if the sharp rise in unsecured credit over that period is out of desperation:

Indicators of changes in loan performance on consumer credit were mixed in recent months. Lenders responding to the CCS reported a second consecutive significant increase in the default rate on other unsecured loans in Q4.

Following falls in recent years, respondents to the CCS reported a rise in Q4 in the default rate on loans to medium PNFCs and a slight rise in the default rate on loans to small businesses.

Tiffany's sales were strong in Asia and weaker than expected in Americas and Europe. Unexpected US weakness was blamed on Trump.

Liked May's speech. Very pragmatic and sensible and covered all the important areas. Hopefully should have put 'Pretend Brexit' firmly to bed.

Shadowside. I think the tamatoes are just beginners luck and having a "sunroom" in the house to put the pot in. Our standard daffodils only sprouted over the weekend and are now about one to two inches tall. Our miniature narcissi are not to be seen. Early snowdrops look like they might reach flower in a week and crocuses might be two or three weeks. Our very tall yellow and cream daffodil variety that I mowed the tips off at the end of November are now about 6 inches tall but no sign of heads yet. The couple of primroses that came out in a pot on the drive in NOvemebr look like they are about to be joined imminently by a cluster. We have some self-seeded pansies or violas in a sunny wall that are growing and could flower in a 2 or 3 weeks. They are accompanied by a selection of small weeds. There is signs of certain patches of grass growing such as under hedges that protect from frost but still allow access to sunshine. There are plenty of fresh shoots popping out of hedges here and there. It all hints that tidying up work will have to begin again in 3 or 4 weeks.

The inflation figures have reached that surge period I warned about. The biggest jump will be next month, perhaps to a CPI of 2.9% and RPI of 3.5%. That probably won't be the peak, though. I fancy it will continue to creep up for a few months after. The question is whether the markets will find this acceptable or not.

I am finding occasional price rises in the supermarket but shrinking portion sizes are far more noticeable. I wonder about quality reductions, affecting taste, having occurred over the holiday period but that might just be down to this never-ending cold which is now in its 8th week for me AND the boys. Mrs A has finally fallen foul of it in the last week, too.

Managed to find some dry weather yesterday for 15 mile yomp through the Eden Valley. Very wet underfoot though and cloud level at about 1000 feet. Fired up the Vitopod propagator at the weekend which always feels like the start of the gardening year.Impressed that Aleman has managed to keep tomatoes fruiting through the winter. I will have to wait until May for the first fruits of the ones I have just planted. This year have gone for small number of many varieties so will run some side by side trials. Also did some clearing up in the garden and green shoots definitely starting to emerge. Early hellebores are already in flower and snowdrops showing a hint of white.

Getting really hacked off with the media use of Hard/Soft Brexit language. It would be much more accurate to use the terms Real/Pretend. I voted for Real and it sounds as if May will be going down that route in her speech today. Fingers crossed.
