Very glad to hear it, MrP.

How can the US GDP be growing reasonably if productivity growth has turned negative for the first time since the early 80s recession? This is yet another of these weirdly conflicting stats of late. Perhaps, productivity figures do not reflect the growth of US internet giants (and similar for online/mobile in the UK?)?

Morning All.

Been clearing emails for most of the last 2 1/2 hours, most of course were a load of rubbish but there were several important ones to deal with.

Good start to the New Year with value of orders received already 76% of the whole month of January last year, so early signs are good.

Planning a couple of fairly large projects at home again this year, with a larger patio area and upgraded rear pathway at the top of the list. New kitchen has been discussed but may need to wait a while!

Fairly quiet start for the SIPP this morning but I see LLOY has just taken it slightly the wrong side of the line.

The thermometer in question hangs on the north-facing wall outside our back door, and ir read weekly to give the maximum and minimum temperatures for the week. The average of those gives the average temperature for the year. I might add that there is a close correlation with our annual heating gas consumption.

I'm just pointing out that my records show a falling trend in average temperature for the last 23 years.

But DF did say this was anecdotal, pvb. I am not sure what you're getting at?

DeanForester 5 Jan '17 - 11:38 - 41540 of 41578 I just looked at teh trend line for average annual temperature outside our back door, and the equation is

f(x)=-0.057x+123.71

where x is the year from 1994 to 2016, taking the trend in average temperature from +10°C to 8.7°C, the highest being 10.5 in 1995 and the lowest 7.6°C in 2010. 2014 was high at 9.6°C but the last two years were similar at 9.1°C.

Purely anecdotal, of course, but I don't believe in global warming theories.

My! You must have a really BIG "outside our back door". It's global!

+0.17% yesterday [FTSE250 +0.18%], making this weeks YTD +1.48%.

Highest value risers : TCAP +7.8%, BGO +13.6%, BA. +3%.

Worst value fallers : IRV -8.4%, IGR -1.9%

Certainly an improvement on last year's week 1, when I was down a similiar %age.

Re Folio - There was no tax owing in year 15/16, but that will not be the case when the current year becomes due with both Dividend and CG Tax liability arising.

This is a good map which illustrates current USA temps.

Have a peaceful w/e.

4 US states have declared states of emergency ahead of snow and bitterly cold weather. It was 1C at 3pm in Houston and forecasted to get to -5 or -6C tonight, which will kill some of the subtropical vegetation.

It's lunch to dinner time across the USA and almost the whole of the 48 states is below freezing, with the coldest bits at 0F and even one -4F(-20C) in mid-afternoon.

A good first week for me too. The SIPP did best with a healthy +1.23%, the pot managed just +0.36% and the Virgin ISA +0.81%

Good day for BMS

Been pouring with rain since early afternoon but the temperature is now rising, 6.4C when I checked just now.

Have a good weekend all, back to work next week!

I'm up +0.233% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.205%), up +0.79% on the week and YTD (FTSE100 +0.94% and HIX +1.05%).

Best rises: BA. +3.0%, LLOY +1.9% and IMI +1.6%.

Worst falls: INDV -2.5%, SMDS -1.1% and WMH -0.8%.

A frustrating evening, having to change Email passwords, which took 3 attempts to get right. There has to be an easier way.

PPG Meeting this afternoon. I'm glad that I have only two more to do before I resign.

Enjoy the weekend.

+0.1% today. YTD +1.0%. January is when I generally pay my tax and book it to my performance. The cheque is gone and I'll now knock it off my spare cash so I start next week at -1.0% YTD.

The day got greyer and wetter as it went on. The high is 4.0C but it is hovering just under that and may creep up further.

I hope you all have a good first weekend of 2017.

As it floats on the sea, the resulting iceberg from the shelf will not raise sea levels.

Not true, I think. A saturated solution of salt water takes up 2.5% less volume than the original pure water alone - and that does not even include the volume of salt, I think. So adding fresh water to salt water will not result in a volume that is a simple arithmetic sum. The diluted seawater will expand and saltened freshwater water will shrink and not by equal amounts. I'm not certain on this. I think I've read somewhere that the two do not balance out and there is a net effect, but I can not find a link.

We had -1.6C. It's horribly drizzly and grey this morning and still being only 2C does not help! There was no snow in the forecast but it such a low temperature suggests it will be doing so on hills nearby.
