12/1/2017 16:55 | Any of those places look good to me Skinny, I love the Greek islands. The SIPP did OK today +0.29% with top risers NG., SSE & BMS but not so good for the pot which struggled again, returning -0.16% due to AMS, DC. & LLOY and I suspect it will get raided again this year to pay for patios etc! The rain has turned to the promised snow, dinner plates for the past half hour or so and surprisingly it's now laying! Better let them all leave early I reckon. Death in Paradise tonight which is light hearted nonsense and some very pleasant viewing ;-) and we have Unforgotten to record on the other side. | mrphil
12/1/2017 16:54 | +0.31% for the Folio [FTSE250 -0.41%]. Highest value risers : CLIG +4.5%, BGO +6.5%, PHTM +2.7%, NG. +1.8%. Worst value fallers : IGR -2%, PHNX -1.2%. Fundraising incl Open Offer in the pipeline from HICL. Light snow falling on Derbyshire hills this evening, [certainly not Greek style], temp 2C. Didn't know Graham Taylor started in management at Lincoln City, RIP. | blueliner
12/1/2017 16:24 | Aleman's link shows Skopelos, which is a flight plus a 1hr 40min ferry from Skiathos. The latter is smaller and looks every bit as lovely - when I clicked on the link, a voice behind me said "that looks nice - where is it?" ........... | skinny
12/1/2017 16:16 | Does look lovely there doesn't it Skinny, but probably better when the snow clears! | mrphil
12/1/2017 16:03 | Thanks for the links Aleman - I'm now looking at possibly going to Skiathos! | skinny
12/1/2017 14:49 | Amazing pictures there Aleman. Passed the gritter at lunchtime which is all very well but it was 7° and pouring with rain?! We are apparently still expecting snow later. | mrphil
12/1/2017 14:41 | Shall we all club together! | mrphil
12/1/2017 13:07 | Coldest night ever recorded in Slovakia? The Greek snow is amazing. Videos: Meteo France satellite snow model suggests it has snowed in the Sahara again, in Southern Algeria. Medea, Algeria has a forecast of heavy snow for the next 4 days. Settled snow is forecast to extend through the Atlas mountain range from Morocco to Tunisia. They do get bit of snow occasionally but not like this. | aleman
12/1/2017 11:54 | Wow, the SIPP has just swung into positive territory, by £7.47! | mrphil
12/1/2017 10:41 | Good update from BDEV so of course the share price has fallen! | mrphil
12/1/2017 10:39 | I like the idea of the Tidal Lagoon, let's hope they can get the first one up and working soon so we can see what the environmental impact will be. It has to make sense to use the power of the sea. Shadowside, I like that quote! | mrphil
12/1/2017 09:57 | There were a couple of UK results that raised eyebrows. Jupiter Asset management had a significant outlow if funds in Q4, with no explanation. AO World produced decent results but shares fell on caution for the next quarter: We expect the Group's performance for the full year to fall within the guidance previously given(1) but remain cautious about the final quarter given the uncertain UK economic outlook, currency impacts on supplier pricing and the possible effect on consumer demand. The UK's heavy online offering seems to be benefitting more than expected from the £'s fall. This could give UK e-tailers a momentum edge on competition or might unwind in the next couple of quarters as currency hedges run out and supply contracts are renewed at less advantageous prices. The UK does have the advantage that its mobile retail market has higher penetration and greater physical density than most of the rest of the world, which could give it an edge some competition. | aleman
12/1/2017 09:20 | Italian Industrial Production m/m 0.7% 0.2% 0.1% | skinny
12/1/2017 09:19 | Excellent! | skinny
12/1/2017 09:12 | On the subject of Trump I think the best quote is from H L Menken (1880-1956) "As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron." | shadowside
12/1/2017 08:58 | DEB is one of the few stores I enjoy strolling around. I'm glad it is holding up well. BGO update looked decent. Still on track to generate cash in Q4 2017 and looking undervalued IF anything near current growth rates can be maintained for a couple of years.. Yet to see wintery weather here. It's sunny and 3.1C, although the temperture is still actually creeping down. | aleman
12/1/2017 08:31 | wllm, totally agree on the Trump bashing but to be honest we've been doing much the same here with Brexit vs Remain. It seems democracy can only be recognised if the vote goes your way! | mrphil
12/1/2017 08:28 | Morning All. Just sent our form in for this months CIPS Monthly Survey of Business Conditions which shows all good against last month but to be honest one large order has skewed the figures a bit. Have reported increased input & sales prices due to Sterling weakness. Pleased to see DEB doing OK which will please a business colleague that does a bit of business with them, although it won't help him recover a debt incurred when the Irish division folded and the UK company won't help despite the contract being for UK & ROI. | mrphil
12/1/2017 07:56 | UK trading updates all seem good today - DEB, MKS, TSCO ABF, ASC. The footfall scares in the UK seem ill-founded, and yet there have been lots of poor US retail (and restaurant) updates and some abysmal ones, amd US internet penetration is only half of the UK's so what is eating into them? There are clearly problems in the USA (pharma and tech, too) and yet the stockmarket marches up to new highs. There are actually some problems in the UK. We knoe fashion sales are weak. Hays UK recruitment revenues fell 9%. THat's a significant fall and in line with weakening employment trends. So how have UK retailers done so well? Well, omline has been strong and international online sales have been very strong thanks to the weak £. Maybe that has undermined some US and EU retailers. I'm still trying to work it out but UK retailers have mostly done well. I'll be watching to see if the poor US update mean its economy is slowing and watching in the UK to see if all the small retail units that emptied in the run-up to Christmas get filled up again. There have still been a large number of redunsancy announcements in recent months in the UK and the good retail numbers have been driven by an unsustainably sharp expansion of consumer credit so I remain very cautious about 2017. | aleman
12/1/2017 07:33 | Like him or loathe him, Mr Trump was democratically elected and the attacks on him are appalling. I'm also sick of so called celebrities feeling their opinion matters on political matters.....Streep, Cumberbatch, Law, Allen et al I hope trading update from DEB is well received, looks good, but, one never knows how the market will react. wllm | wllmherk
11/1/2017 23:27 | I thought that I had reported, but obviously not. I am up +0.099% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.206%). Best rises: BLT +1.6% then RIO and VOD, both +1.4%. Worst falls: TW. -2.5%, TSCO -2.0 and AZN -1.7%. AZN obviously fell foul of Trump. TW. had a good trading update, so fell, of course. Pestilence tomorrow, it seems. DF | deanforester
11/1/2017 19:49 | Despite the FTSE's continued rise its been a poor few days for me as I'm heavily weighted towards insurers, DLG, LRE and ESUR the main culprits. Gale force winds last night, we live close to the Forth Road Bridge which has been closed all day after a lorry got blown over. Apparently, the driver ignored the warning signs. wllm | wllmherk |
