I would be pretty confident that that IMG RT would be targeted as an add-on for the AMD FirePro professional graphics cards which already support RT via software (Getting from there into mass market products with full software support will in my view still be a massive cliff to climb even within AMD products since they need 3rd party software support).

According to Jon Peddie AMD and Nvidia together shipped 1.27 million professional graphics cards for workstations last year so we are not looking at a huge market even if AMD can increase its market share.

This might even take us 'up' to where we were when Caustic was shipping its add-on RT card that IMG sold for a while before discontinuing them..... :-(

Borromini 1 , that's what I have been saying for weeks. I totally get that we are seemingly being set up for yet another one of IMG's perennial disappointments ( in terms of building one up to be dismayed) but the PR blag for this summit is something else, it will be a major disappointment if 'nothing concrete' is revealed.

I woukd add that I completely expect nothing new now that I have got so optimistic again ;-)

By way of introduction I turned up late at the last AGM and asked questions on RT. AH stated expect revenues in 3 years, second half 2019, licences 12-18 months, second half 2017. RT going into workstations first. When asked are we going to be competing against AMD and Nvidia AH stated we will only be competing with one of them. In later conversation DH confirmed this as the first time this had been publicly stated and that RT can be licensed and implemented independently of Power VR. So AMD and Nvidia have the option to combine RT with their existing graphics capability or adopt combined Power VR and RT. AMD are in Apple workstations, adopting RT should help them defend that position against Nvidia. AMD at a IMG summit looking towards 2025 seems an ideal opportunity to announce a comprehensive long term partnership if not the first acknowledged RT licensing deal.

Thanks Ian

I totally 'get' Papermasters speaking at an important 'industry event' but IMG are pitching their summit firmly at customers, the summit is a PR event for IMG, so that's why I am a tad confused. I agree it's likely to involve VR and/or AR , I am hoping it's not concentrating on heterogeneous computing

As for Apple-Papermaster was a big ticket acquisition but his short tenure was apparently due to Steve Jobs not liking him ;-) that doesn't make him unique in any way, he either loved you or thought you were worthless.

We should be getting a trading statement around 21st of this month

Dave,

These guys like to get around.

He was in Berlin in Sept to give a VR/AR keynote at IFA in Sept(big consumer show that Pure used to regularly attend). Perhaps his IMG keynote is a reworking of that without quite so much AMD-centric emphasis.

More than happy to see an AMD licence, joint venture or any engagement.

For those that are unaware, Papermaster was for 18 months or so at Apple as head of device hardware engineering.

"I believe his appearance is significant and the portents are good"
Its already been established AMD have not licenced RT for their next generation of GPU's. So why do you think it will be significant? Why do you think it has nothing to do with our current Vulkan partnership but something else? I don't understand where you are coming from.

"Why on earth woukd he be 'wasting his time' giving a 'talk' at another companies"
Does someone else want to explain it to Sweenoid? I can only assume he has me blocked or is ignoring me again. Its kind of odd how Sweenoid blocked me for crazy RT talk then goes and does crazy RT talk himself. Sweenoid seems to be completely unware of our Vulkan partnership with AMD which explains the talk.

It would be nice if the AMD guy speaker meant there was some relationship, however, it is also often the case that these type of general keynotes are given by industry leaders that don't necessarily have a relationship with the company concered.

I'm sure SHY spoke at many such events with which IMG had no commerical dealings.

Just watched the presentation on AMD’s new GPU’s and well I am not really surprised at this but there is no IMG RT technology used by AMD. So we are not in AMD next generation of GPU's.

“i was hoping for some announcement re a potential tie up with AMD for the RT from GDC, still a few days to go , now THAT would be big news , the question still begs- what IS Papermaster doing at the upcoming summit?? and why is he there?”

Most likely he is going to talk about Vulkan, VR and/or Heterogeneous processing after all we do have a Vulkan partnership with AMD. It’s extremely unlikely to be anything RT related as the timelines don’t match. There isn’t enough time to get RT in the next AMD GPU generation and its way too early to be talking about RT in 2 AMD generations ahead.

official announcement from Spreadtrum

as Ian said gotta be good news- frankly ANY news in the smartphone SOC arena is good. The big question will be how mass will the mass production be ??

Spreadtrum and Intel are massive companies with huge incentives to get this going, lets hope that this SOC AND the Helio X30 gets some traction

RB - thanks.

Notwithstanding the analyst's wonderful insight, it's also quite "likely" that Mediatek didn't want to risk creating a chipset with potential overheat issues considering it's smartphone target market, and so went for a graphics IP supplier with no history in that regard.

Curiously, with Helio X30, MediaTek has shifted from ARM's Mali GPUs to Imagination's PowerVR graphics cores. Kevin Krewell, principal analyst at Tirias Research, speculated, “It’s likely Imagination desperately needed new momentum and made a new deal with MediaTek.”

"Those graphics subsystems have been widely utilized in iPhones, albeit heavily modified, and it is intriguing to see them in a MediaTek chipset, to say the least, as GPUs were the weak point in them before."

In one way thats massive news, IMG once again paired with an Intel CPU.

In another way however, it's disapointing. It was hoped that Spreadtrum would NOT be tied to using Intel cpus to gain access to Intel as a foundry.

Chinese mobile manufacturer Vernee is apparently set to debut its latest flagship, the Apollo 2, in Barca this year. The phone is most notable for being the first in the world to feature MediaTek's new-gen 10-core Helio X30 processor. Whether or not UK and US markets ever see the device remains to be seen, but it's certainly one to watch.
