06/8/2014 07:50 | Nobby, I agree, but until it goes ex div the big div will help underpin the share price Of course on the day of ex div the share price will drop by the 18p | robertfaulkner

04/8/2014 14:50 | RF, why should the announcement of a special dividend increase the value of a company's shares? In effect the company is saying 'We don't really have plans for the reinvestment of the cash flow we've generated so we're giving some of the excess capital back to you shareholders. Suppose it's better than them announcing that they'll get rid of surplus cash on the books by a share buy-back, but no new value has been created by this announcement. Another alternative would have been the announcement of a substantial increase in the ordinary dividends. To my mind that would have shown more management confidence in the future, i.e. that increased profits would continue to roll in making such increased dividends sustainable. It's interesting that they chose not to do so. | nobbyx
04/8/2014 14:03 | Excellent statement, time for a small topup methinks! | wipo1
04/8/2014 12:34 | Well you are guaranteed 15p +3p = 18p Div if you hold until 25th Sept so a rise of 14p on that announcement is not that good. | robertfaulkner
04/8/2014 12:16 | There are various views as to the merits or otherwise of share consolidation and indeed of share splits. In the USA and parts of Europe share prices are extremely heavy and it doesn't seem to make much difference. I was looking at a UK share the other day called Camellia and the share price is over £100. Would have to say that for most PI's a heavy share price tends to act as a negative. Might be worth contacting the company's PR team and asking them for a view or getting them to ask the FD as to why they are doing it. Decent rise in the share price -finally. | meijiman
04/8/2014 11:56 | Hadn't thought of the large number of Cooksons holders who got the split but would owning 30 Alnt shares at £35 each or 300 shares at £3.50 each make them more likely to sell? I thought it just made the shares less liquid if they cost 10x as much(or 5x) Perhaps the statement explains it, I'll have to have a look | robertfaulkner
04/8/2014 10:47 | Yes that clarifies the special dividend and indeed the ordinary dividend dates. | meijiman
04/8/2014 10:38 | The dividends will be paid to 'shareholders on the register of members at close of business on 26 September 2014' That is 'Record Day'. The shares will go XD 2 days before that on Wednesday Sept 24th. | nobbyx
04/8/2014 09:32 | Special dividend of 15p to be paid 17th Oct (Ex Div 6th Sep) plus normal 3p interim (same dates) and they want to do a share consolidation??????? Why when shares are 340p ish, they are not penny shares. Do they want them at £5 to £6 each so they can then do a Rights Issue soon afterwards????????? Yield this year 7% (with special div at today's SP) 8. DIVIDENDS The final dividend for the year ended 31 December 2013 of GBP15.9m (year ended 31 December 2012: GBP15.3m), equivalent to 5.71 pence (year ended 31 December 2012: 5.5 pence) per ordinary share, was paid on 19 June 2014. The Board has declared an interim dividend of 3.0 pence (2013: 2.89 pence) per ordinary share in respect of the year ending 31 December 2014. The interim dividend will be paid on 17 October 2014 to ordinary shareholders on the register of members at close of business on 26 September 2014. Based upon the number of ordinary shares in issue at 30 June 2014, the total cost of the dividend would be GBP8.4m. SPECIAL DIVIDEND The Board has also approved a special dividend to shareholders of 15.0 pence per share, which represents a total payment of approximately GBP42 million. The special dividend will be accompanied by a share consolidation, which is subject to shareholder approval at a general meeting. The special dividend is to be paid on 17 October 2014 to shareholders on the register of members at close of business on 26 September 2014. Full details of the proposals will be provided to shareholders in a circular to be issued in due course | robertfaulkner
04/8/2014 09:14 | Decent looking half year report. Quite alot to digest. No change to guidance but overall reads well IMO. | meijiman
24/7/2014 20:47 | Thanks UKDOU | robertfaulkner
24/7/2014 18:16 | You will only get a price for up to 1000 shares at a time, they aren't liquid enough for 1000s at a time. i missed 3.70trying to sell 8000. | uklou2000
24/7/2014 09:24 | Stange today(and certain days) nearly 9:30am, no trades yet today but dealers have marked the buy price up 6p and the sell price up a little. When I did a pretend sell of my 5000 odd ALNT shares(on Selftrade) the auto trade would not give me a price? | robertfaulkner
17/7/2014 11:06 | Cheers Bob. regards......kazz | kazz
17/7/2014 10:07 | You should be able to find the actual trade on that day, you have the time on the contract. If it is way below all other trades maybe you can threaten going to the ombudsman. | robertfaulkner
16/7/2014 09:24 | Bob I phoned them, but to no joy. There's a surprise. They said the share priced plunged?????????? the offer was still at about 351, but they dropped the bid to 338.2, took my shares, then put the bid back up again to 350ish. out of about 350 trades that day, the bid didn't really go below 350. Daylight robbery and sharp practice. Its difficult enough to make money in this casino without them helping. Loyal customers, no chance. Regards.....Kazz ps i have since removed all stop losses. | kazz
16/7/2014 08:47 | That is bad, I thought you were S Bing When you want to buy shares with limit Buys, the share price has to go way past the limit we set, to get the shares | robertfaulkner
15/7/2014 08:34 | Hi Bob They were paid for shares with Iweb. I will be calling them this morning. Grrrr. Regards....kazz | kazz
15/7/2014 07:29 | Kazz, was that a IG Index spread bet that got hit? It's as if they have a secret program that detects when stops are close and blips the price up or down to pick off otherwise profitable bets. I used to keep moving my stops if the price got near, unfortunately I often ended up losing even more in the long run. I gave up S B's a while ago and just use IGs platform as a free live share price display. I found I was spending too much time watching my bets(and still losing) | robertfaulkner
14/7/2014 19:22 | Bob Put a stop loss at 339 today and got hit. All the other lowest prices were at 349/350. How can they do this? Regards....kazz | kazz
13/7/2014 19:00 | FT Weekend paper(Sat 12th July) had an article in the London Market section saying Liberum Capital says Alent is upgraded to 400p and should not be 12% lower than the norm for chemical company shares Is Liberum Alent's broker? | robertfaulkner
11/7/2014 14:55 | Hope this rise is not a 'dead cat bounce' | robertfaulkner
10/7/2014 09:55 | Got back in at 341.64, couldn't think of any other share low enough to invest my proceeds from sale of Alent over 30 days ago. (sold at 360p) Either very lucky to get back in after such a rise(then drop) or market knows something and I'll regret it Unfortunately I did have to pay stamp duty on purchase | robertfaulkner |
