I must admit that this is one of my more interesting holdings for 2014. I know that there is an element of "if you see a Swiss Banker jump out of a 22nd floor window jump after him because there is bound to be a profit in it!" but even without that prospects look good on fundamentals alone. Academic studies indicate that demerged entities tend to outperform after they get themselves organised and that is exactly what I am anticipating here.

Smacks of the MMs shaking the tree yesterday. I still have confidence with the direction given the recent spate of director buys, even though a few of the larger investors have recently lowered their holdings.

Hi Robert, Some information from RNS also a small article in the shares magazine on the purchases by Cevian Capital and some internet research. I also own some shares in RGS that followed a very similar pattern of events director and a 3rd party buying. In the case of RGS Hanover Investors (turnaround specialists as opposed to a hedge fund)made a significant top up investment. RGS shares then appreciated by approximately 35% in the next 2m's. I am not saying this will happen here. But I always think the chances of a positive outcome increase if other parties have invested particularly when it is both directors' and a 3rd party investor who needs a return on their outlay as is the case with Cevian who have invested a very significant sum. In a nutshell their interests are aligned with us the shareholders and the fact they have a representative on the board allows them to influence things going forward.

on present forecast profit estimates this does not look bad value -could see 400p on fundamentals. also looks like others agree. Prime takeover target as well-all IMHO.Not sure about any read across from AZEM-but there is some business overlap.Ulra also in the frame.

AZEM, were bid for by Merck yesterday (no price creeping up as news seeped out) and up 50%, they are in a similar field to Alent so let's hope the the bid fever reaches Alent

And it's a cash purchase

Two directors have bought (25 & 42,000), however Lars Forberg (who represnts Cevian Captial) is on the board and has done the majority of the buying last 3 purchases almost 14 million pounds worth have been bought on behalf Cevian Captial a Swedish hedge fund who obviously see value in this share going forward. It has convinced me to buy a small stake.

I've topped up this morning: the consistent Director buying has got to indicate something. Have been watching this one via a modest position since the demerger and it has been disappointing to date. I think that the Hedgies may be getting a bit fed up as well and might be looking to take control or set up a buyer. That has always been a possibility here. Bags of potential; relatively poor execution.

Normally a sign of directors feeling share price is greatly undervalued or there is something else brewing in the pipeline! Either way it looks good!!

Usually a very good sign when the director buys shares because he knows the real up to date situation of a company, I'm surprised we haven't had a much bigger jump towards 360p again

I like directors with "skin in the game" and for me 4.2 million fits the bill. I think the upside / downside risk is now very good at current price

ALENT NON-EXEC RAPIDLY GROWS HOLDING WITH THREE SHARE PURCHASES

Lars Forberg, a Non-Executive Director of Alent, this week topped up his stake in the company with three rounds of share purchases.

The group, which supplies consumable specialty chemicals and engineered materials, reported that Forberg bought 49,000 shares at 311p for £152,390 on November 18th, followed by a further 35,000 the following day, bought at 316p.

By far the largest purchase was made on Thursday, when he acquired 4.21m shares at 325p a piece, taking his total holding to just short of 60m shares.

The FTSE 250 company, which was demerged from Cookson in December 2012, announced earlier this month that trading since July had been "slightly" below its expectations due to softer demand in consumer electronics end-markets, having in August said it was positioned "to grow NSV and to improve margins on higher volumes during the second half".

It also said full-year net sales value would be flat for the full year due to fewer people buying personal computers.

For that same time period management stressed that visibility remained limited as consumer electronics end-markets were showing "more muted seasonal pick-up" in demand and NSV was expected to be "around the same levels as 2012 with slightly unfavourable product mix", which will presumably dent profit margins.

On the 20th it shot up on an RNS about buying on 21st it shot down to 313p although closed at 327p down 4p
robertfaulkner
21/11/2013

That RNS related to the buying of shares at £3.11 on the 18/11/13 by Cevian, which was within the days trading range. The director is only named as 'person discharging managerial responsibilities/director',.The millions shown are the total holding of Cevian.

3 later RNS posts relate to the further purchases (including a 4+million buy) and the fact that it took Cevian past the 5% holding position.

I hope they know something we don't!

RNS at 14:20 today about a Director buying millions of shares from Cevian at 311p (Was 330p at open today)

Anybody know what the RNS means (Is Cevian getting out and a Director is getting them on the cheap?)
