Berkshire Hathaway's private business jet operator NetJets is buying Marquis Jet for an undisclosed sum.

Marquis sells cards that offer 25 hours of flight time on NetJets aircraft. Marquis was founded in 2001 to offer smaller fractions of jet ownership than NetJets would sell. The smallest fractional ownership share NetJets offered included 50 hours of flight time annually.

LBO: As anticipated ( post 219 ) share price is mired in the 380 to 400p range. Probably will re-visit the '350s' ..when this goes ex-divi?

FT report on corporate aviation today. On Africa:

The football world cup saw a spike in business jet use in Africa. But there are signs that, over and above those few busy weeks, private aviation across the continent is on a robust upward trend.

Tag Aviation, the global group that has one of the largest fleets of "wide-body" jets that can serve Africa direct from Europe, has seen a 30 per cent increase in charter flights to and from the continent this year.

In a bold sign of the recovering economy, NetJets has inked a deal with Embraer for up to 125 Phenom 300 light jets.

The agreement, signed Monday at the show, is for 50 firm orders plus an additional 75 options, with first delivery expected in 2013.

The order marks a return to expansion by NetJets after the global economy nearly decimated the fractional ownership industry, and could provide a respite for furloughed business aviation pilots.

LBO: Looks like I was right ( for once!) on the trading range. Once the divi is out of the way I guess this share will struggle a bit for direction?

LBO : Thanks.

Don't see any short term action on these . Probably a drift back initially to trade in the 380 to 400p range. I note the spread has tightened considerably.

B.W ; Having skimmed the results my view is 'encouraging'. No nasty suprises. Yes conditions remain challenging BUT company has seen a modest rise in activity .

I see this as a sound recovery play with an nice dividend to collect.

This is 'a hold' for me.

Heathrow sees record passenger numbers in September

BAA said much of the rise came from a jump in business travel.

The news follows upbeat reports by airlines revealing increases in passenger numbers - last week, British Airways announced that there was a 4.3 per cent hike in passenger numbers in September, its first since February

Few industries took such a hit in the recession as private-jet hire, but Air Partner appears to be flying high again. It lagged the wider economy going into the downturn so it is not surprising that it has been slow coming out, and has yet to return to profit. But Arbuthnot reckons this year will represent the trough, with Air Partner expected to bring in £3.1m after tax in the year to July 2011 and £4.3m for 2012. The broker calls it a buy at 324p and sets a target of 435p.

Air Partner (LSE: AIP.L - news) , the only aviation company with a royal warrant to charter planes for Queen Elizabeth, has won a contract to be the sole provider of passenger and freight flights for the Department for International Development over the next four years.

The Gatwick-based company, one of the few listed aircraft charter brokers in the world, beat three other groups for the deal, including the two that held it previously, Air Services and Chapman Freeborn.

Air Partner said it was not clear how much the contract would be worth as this would depend on the number of times its services were used by DfID, which is responsible for almost all UK humanitarian airlifts.

However, the contract offers the chance for more reliable government business for Air Partner, which has been hit by the recent downturn in private jet travel along with many other players in the highly cyclical industry.

The group has arranged flights for people ranging from executives in top global corporations to the White House press corps; past Labour government MPs and, most recently, Conservative party MPs during the May general election in the UK. It does not have a large fleet of its own, but arranges aircraft from airlines and other owners for its customers.

Its profits plummeted during the downturn, which saw it put a subsidiary that managed private jets for a handful of extremely wealthy people into administration earlier this year, following failed attempts to sell it. The group bought the operation for £5.1m ($7.8m) in 2006, at the height of the boom for private jet travel.

David Savile, the group's chief executive of 17 years, stepped down in March after 27 years with the company. Mr Savile has just been announced as the new chief executive of Starflight Aviation, a UK charter broker, based at Farnborough airport.

Since its half-year results in March, Air Partner has issued two profit upgrades, and ahead of its full year results on Tuesday, the board has repeated its plan to recommend a dividend.

LBO and robinnicolson : Trading update issued by company on 28th July stated that underlying profits were ahead of revised expectations and that trading in the fourth quarter had been strong. This week's dividend declaration supports a positive set of results on 12/10. If AIP is a genuine recovery play then its understandable for there to be some takeover speculation.

If I'm right about next week ..then...I see this share trading north of 500p very quickly.
