Last published balance sheet (31/7/8) shows £20.7 of cash but also £29.5 of other current liabilities. Any idea what they are?

No surprise that they are suffering in the downturn! But no debt and cash on balance sheet means they are well able to ride it out. Many others going bust!

Air Partner has reported that its block charter JetCard activity continues to grow, with a claimed 50-percent increase in sales since last July. It attributes as much as 95 percent of this new business to wealthy individuals, who appear immune to the U.S.-based credit crisis, which continues to wreak havoc in global financial markets.

Yet on the subject of the economic outlook for the whole private aviation sector, Savile is bullish. "It's crazy," he observes. "The world's in recession but everyone's flying private jets." Air Partner's half-year results for the period ending 31 January, showed a 20% increase in new clients and record profits.

A brokering and charter company, Air Partner, handled all World Cup team flights in France. Top sportsmen and women, celebrities and politicians, like the stranded business executive, routinely use air brokers in preference to commercial airline services.

Business for air brokers is booming. According to a 2006 report by Eurocontrol, the organization in Brussels that coordinates and regulates European air traffic management, private business traffic is growing at twice the rate of total air traffic, with 22 percent growth in business traffic recorded in 2005 against 10 percent overall growth.

Gilles Meynard, the chief executive at Air Partner's French unit, said the company had seen "100 percent growth this year in the business aviation sector." Deschamps said about 10 percent of all business traffic was handled by brokers, and that percentage is rising fast.

Questor says Buy

If there was ever an argument to be made for Air Partner, the much anticipated opening of T5 made it pretty strongly last week. Why suffer in Heathrow Hell when you can charter your own plane to get you - and hopefully your luggage - where you want to go at your own convenience?

There is the price consideration of course, and that is why shares in the company have suffered so much in recent months. The anticipation of an economic slowdown, particularly in the financial services world on which Air Partner largely relies, has sent the stock price into a tailspin.

Yesterday the company provided evidence that the fears have been overdone. In the six months to the end of January, sales grew 21pc to £109m and pre-tax profits were 12pc higher at £3.9m, as globalisation and geopolitical instability reinforced the need for the company's core offering.

With governments also increasing their usage - and with the Royal Warrant from the Queen - the company was able to report that while visibility may have been hit by the credit crunch, forward bookings have not, with revenues 40pc ahead of the same period last year.

Troops still need moving on peacekeeping missions, aid still needs to be delivered and the US press corp still needs ferrying around behind Air Force One.

Air Partner has striven to diversify its operations in terms of product offering and geography, meaning that strong performance in Europe has more than offset weakness in the US.

"Everything hasn't just stopped because of the credit crunch on the corporate side," chief executive David Savile said. "Our products are judged to be essential by our clients. This is not seen as discretionary spending." He even forecast the second half of the year would be better than the first.

Questor tipped Air Partner at £10.10 a year ago and, after a rise to £13, the stock stood yesterday at 925p. Trading on around 15 times next year's earnings, Questor believes the shares offer a good bargain.

Like Senior, Air Partner, the private jet brokerage, is also flying high. Disillusion with airport queues, combined with increased numbers of wealthy individuals demanding rapid, bespoke services have spurred a rapid growth in global private aviation in recent years.

Air Partner, which was established 46 years ago, has been a beneficiary of this shift. Pre-tax profit rose by nearly 80 per cent to £5.13m between 2002 and 2006.

David Savile, chief executive, has poured the profits back into expanding the business. He paid £5.1m for Gold Air International to give Air Partner its first in-house aircraft fleet two years ago and is looking to invest £7m to build a new terminal and hangar at Biggin Hill, the airport in Kent. Mr Savile's ambition is for the airport to become a "high-security enclave" for the rich and famous.

But while the Royal family and Sir Philip Green figure among Air Partner's high- profile clients, the company is not totally reliant on high-rollers.

A third of its business comes from governments, two-thirds from companies and it is geographically diversified, covering 15 countries. The spread of the business should help shield the company against any possible downturn

FYI

Daniel Stewart published a 'buy' recommendation and a 1,520p price target for shares in Air Partner (AIP), which it referred to as a "safe haven in the aviation sector." At the interim stage, the broker is looking for looking for 4.485 million pounds pre-tax profits, up 29% on the prior year's 3.464 million pounds. The shares descended 19p to 950.5p despite the note
