The big fear is the unknown, mathematicians in these situations are a bit like stock market chartists doing their best with the available information and historical patterns.

The politicians have to follow advice given by scientists and hope that we can stop it getting to the situation that arose with the Spanish flu where not thousands but millions died when it all got out of hand.
===============================================

Spanish flu
Unusually Deadly Influenza Pandemic
The Spanish flu was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic. Lasting from January 1918 to December 1920, it infected 500 million people—about a quarter of the world's population at the time. The death toll is estimated to have been anywhere from 17 million to 50 million, and possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the deadliest pandemics in human history.

Mental health in these times is as important as physical health (probably true at any time). A point that although mentioned early on by CMO seems to have been forgotten by some police forces flying drones to catch people going to watch the sunset at largely deserted beauty spots.

Will these measures make people live longer or just make it feel that way? The key issue is not to overload the NHS, beyond that as many lower risk people as possible need to catch the virus and join the immune herd. Some will still die, but probably only as many as those who are not dying on the roads now there is so much less traffic.

Prof Ferguson is a mathematician and there are lots of highly qualified medical people who completely disagree with him this time just as they disagreed with him on the other occasions when he we proved to be totally wrong. Hopefully once through the peak, the voices of reason will be heard above the hysterical babble and we can all get down the pub on May Day.

The majority of the club I run are in your age range with varying degrees of health, I had a vote on whether to keep the club open or close and only four thought we should close. I then said that while there was such a low infection rate in the area I would keep it open, one week later we were forced to close.

Roy. " but are being made to suffer in order that some oldies with not long to live can survive for a couple of months more stuck indoors rather than taking their 1 in 10 chance of dying but enjoying life."

I should say that I'm 85 years old Roy and fitter than many 30 year olds.

Did you watch Peston arguing with the testing scientist last night?

Testing is the number one priority now! This will not only get the country and many self isolating nurses back to work but also give us better figures for the likes of Professor Ferguson to work with.

In response to being called selfish, the pot calling the kettle black!
As to being selfish, I realise that the young fit and healthy are unlikely to die but are being made to suffer in order that some oldies with not long to live can survive for a couple of months more stuck indoors rather than taking their 1 in 10 chance of dying but enjoying life.
I still think the herd immunity will eventually get us out of this mess but I do not agree with professor Ferguson's calculations. He treats the human race as a herd of zebras but in our society we have what I will call interactors, like nurses and commuters going to their vital service jobs, they are the ones that will build up the antibodies and that will drastically slow down the spread, as many in the human herd do not travel or interact much it is not as important that they should have the herd immunity. I would agree that large gatherings such as football matches should be stopped until the infection rate shows a large fall due to the spread between those that are not normally interactors.

When you suggest that anyone who argues the point with you is 'brainwashed' Roy you seriously undermine your argument.

At least the last exchange proves that Vaneric and myself are not the same person, as accused by Darren and some of the company shills. :)

Well the proof will be in the pudding. China appears to have ended their lockdown - if they have another spike (if reported) it will be clear they jumped the gun. Ditto a few countries have not bothered with a lockdown - so let's see what difference this makes

Common sense would be to follow the advice Roy especially if your wife in in the at risk class.

How can I be selfish when I believe that fewer people will suffer in the long term if we use common sense rather than a lock down. There are already tragic cases being reported that can be attributed to the lock down such as the guy whose business has suffered and he took his own life plus the lives of his wife and two children. No I am not being selfish, I am running the house at the moment because my wife is getting over a serious illness and my son is doing 13 to 14 hour days if you include his travelling time, I am just using common sense.

I think your selfish attitude would change if one of your nearest and dearest succumbs to this virus Roy...……….or maybe you don't have any such people.

Here's another thing, the corporate headquarters of the multi million dollar Streamcast is an empty plot in a small town.
