Stick with the shares "bountyhunter" you'll have a better return. A good week for Whitbread shares holders with them closing at 1395p gaining 118p/+9.24%, at one point on Friday they broke through the 1400p per share mark, but then fell back in later trading.

Alan Parker the chief executive is determined to add shareholder value and has committed himself to doubling the size Whitbread over the next 5 years. I don't think they can build their way to the increase so I think that they will have to acquire one of their competitors. Given the problems that M&B's are having I think their Innkeppers Lodge brand would be a good fit, especially if Whitbread could also get their hands on the co-located pubs next door to the lodges, possibly Whitbread could swap some of their standalone Brewers Fayre & Beefeaters in a deal with M&B.

If you had invested your "hard earned" cash in Whitbread just 4 weeks ago you would of seen a gain of over 243p/21% - not bad for one of the oldest companies in FTSE. I still think these shares can go higher, a year ago they where at 1874p. Any thoughts from anyone.....

yes login, however I have to admit that my crude oil trading has not been successful so I'm giving that a break for now although still monitoring the situation as the price of oil has such far-reaching consequences
...fortunately my shareholdings have compensated for my poor trading!

gfaw - lol -my son, then aged nine, explained to me what a daft user name I have. Actually it suits me. Middle aged technophobe loon that I am. Might as well leave it. Must go and put some logs in the cabin stove now!
Bountyhunter - I see you stated a thread called "oil" with thousands of post on it! Quite a far cry from Whitbread and the quiet life in this part of the cyberuniverse.

Great to see a bit of interest - I was beginning to think that I was the only private shareholder here! At long last Whitbread's fortunes may be improving?!?

Nice to see a compliment to a good post (Login means spare fuel for the cabin stove, I think)
What looks like an upturn on the 50 day MA could mean we are lookink towards a golden cross. Anyone who understands these things is welcome to put me right.

GOod post ricky. Very useful. I bought a few WTB (at 1320p) for the "always" portfolio. There was something about WTB on CNBC a few mornings ago. They are not losing out as a result of the ban on smoking as pub chains are. That reminded me to have a look at the chart. (Which I last looked at ages ago like about two years ago, liked what I saw and then forgot about it) Sounds to me from your post that Premier Inns is a successful brand that can be cloned. At this point my thoughts peter out... I'm incapable of sustained research but intuition, FWIW,.... I think the share price will take a breather at 1400. But potential for more.

At last these shares are on the up, finished the day off at 1352.06, I think they can go all the way to 1450.00, given that over 70% of profits are coming from the Premier Inn brand which should surge in the current credit crunch as business downgrade to budget hotels. Any thoughts from anyone....

that's probably because you like to invest in sensible things, Overzeal, where companies make real profits before tax, generate cash, hold real assets and pay dividends. BB punters aren't interested; they want get-rich-quick penny stocks in companies which have often never made a penny profit in their lives and probably never will. I'm with you, mate - boring it may be but, like you, my portfolio is more green than red and certainly so at the bottom line.

8-)
