Hoa Phat raising prices after an extended period of lowering them. Shares up 3% today.

Sunday Times recommending VOF and VEIL. That probably explains their performance on Friday. The market today took care of those moves and a bit more today. Hoa Phat, its largest holding until its collapse, was up 6% today despite a continuing deterioration in its steel business.

Dollar Index appears to have peaked out after the US GDP figures. I notice, though, that Sterling's increase against Dollar is less than the fall in that Index. I expect the UK's economic figures to keep that trend going if not decline absolutely.

A big drop in the discount over the past two days to circa 14%, narrower than that for VEIL which is unusual. I don't have the foggiest idea why but I hope it stays here. All we need now is the Vietnam market to make some serious progress back to its high.

Dung by name dung by nature?

HANOI : Vietnam has fired the chairman of its State Securities Commission, the Ministry of Finance said on Friday, as the country intensifies a crackdown on graft.

Tran Van Dung, 57, was sacked for "having committed serious violations and wrongdoings", the ministry said in a statement, without elaborating.

Dung did not respond to requests for comment.

The Southeast Asian country in March called for the anti-corruption drive to be stepped up, with a focus on financial markets.

A series of high-profile corporate arrests on accusations of market manipulation has triggered a $40 billion wipeout for Vietnamese stocks and rattled investor confidence in the fast-growing economy.

Earlier this week, the director general of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange was expelled from the Communist Party of Vietnam and authorities issued warnings to several other stock market officials for "violations."

The Vietnam market was always going to be affected by the decline on Wall Street and this domestic issue has added further to the decline in local investor confidence in the short run. However, reducing corruption in the financial markets will be a plus in MSCI's consideration of Vietnam's inclusion in its Emerging Market's Index. Also, as Vietnam's second biggest export market, China's massive stimulus package should add to Vietnam's growth rate later this year.

I've read that 95% of trading is done by locals. I suspect that the concept of long term value isn't included in their books on trading. Just buy when the market's going up and sell when the market's going down. The market was absolutely trashed today after a bad Friday. No fundamental reason beyond a report suggesting inflation will be above the government's target for 2022 and growth will be below. That's a surprise?

Vietnam has historic links with Russia. It was Vietnam's backer in the war with the US. As a one party state it has more in common with Russia. However, based on the respective trade flows, the US and Europe are becoming increasingly important.

The market closed down 1.78% today despite very low infections and deaths reported yesterday. Foreigners were net buyers.

Wouldn't touch India with a barge pole, too corrupt, always has been probably always will be.

Vietnam, I noted they voted against ejecting Russia from the UN human rights council the other day, so lets be under no illusion they could just as easily become our enemy as Russia have become.

I buy both VEIL and VOF as their holdings are complimentary. All of them are buying back I think. No idea why they trade at a discount when every Chinese city lockdown is another company that builds out in Vietnam.

Good summation. In a different market, IGC might also be worth a look. Another big discount. Vietnam and India could offer good diversification at this point.

VOF seems to have the best discount 18.5% and even pays a small dividend so guess that looks the best upon a quick eyelash.

VEIL at 18% and no dividend looks slightly more expensive.

VNH on 13% discount seems to have been supported by buy backs then which cannot go on for ever, so longer term not as attractive.

Did I miss anything ?

VOF, VEIL or VNH... I mainly go for whichever has the greater discount to NAV at the time of purchase.

Despite the difference between the official number of daily infections and the day to day totals, there does seem to be a definite downtrend. Reported deaths are very low.
