Although the 'stay at home' time, through the virus, has helped online companies,I believe gaming companies are here to stay and the trend is set to only grow.

Outlook:

-- Games sector resilience through the Covid pandemic also reflected in Team17 performance

-- Clear benefit to H1 results from these extraordinary "one-off" circumstances and as a result the Board now expects revenue and adjusted EBITDA to be ahead of market expectations for the year ended 31 December 2020

-- H2 results will undoubtedly continue to be influenced by "normalisation" of the global economic environment and consumer behaviours

-- Solid portfolio of new titles including key franchise releases scheduled in H2

Record H1 performance aligned with a solid portfolio of new releases across H2

Team17 , a global games label, creative partner and developer of independent ("indie") premium video games, is pleased to announce its unaudited interim results for the six months ended 30 June 2020 ("H1 2020").

Agreed - great results - So many highlights: Record H1 revenues grew 28% to £38.8m (H1 2019: £30.4m), Gross profit up 21% to £18.3m (H1 2019: £15.1m), Record H1 profit before tax up 28% to £13.3m (H1 2019: £10.4m). I'm very optimistic about the World War 2 game Hell Let Loose with its full launch in 2021. It's really caught gamers' imaginations, has over 15,000 reviews on Steam even in Early Access mode, and has 87% recent positive reviews - officially Very Positive. It seems the last Trading update was prudently cautious but expecting a good bounce today so we should be solidly into the 700s again.

Gamesndustry.biz has a few good articles on Team17 and this is worth a read if you missed it back in July:

I love this part: "We had a few offers from big companies, but Debbie [Bestwick] was completely different. She contacted me on LinkedIn with just a friendly message, and we started talking from there.

"It was night and day compared with other companies... The other companies just wanted to help themselves, it felt like, whereas she wanted to help us. The deal felt very friendly and it has been an enjoyable adventure so far. I am glad we waited, but she did come at the right time. I have already told her this, but she's like the angel who scooped us up and helped us complete what we started.

"She took the time to talk to us, and she's the boss... She didn't get someone else to do it, she did it herself. That meant a hell of a lot."

I have no insider knowledge on this but I don't believe that they are on the lookout for further businesses at the moment. They bought Yippee Entertainment back in Jan this year but I believe that they want to grow organically and acquire the skills within their own team. Plus of course as publishers they are partnering with developers all around the world anyway: Australia (Golf With Your Friends, Moving Out (also Sweden), Hell Let Loose), Malaysia (Ageless), Spain (Blasphemous - new Spanish voiceover this summer could make this big in South America too), Mexico (Greak), Sweden (Main Assembly, Hammerting), USA (Going Under, Rogue Heroes), China (Neon Abyss, Crown Trick).

Re acquisitions, quoting from gamesindustry.biz here...

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz back in 2018, CEO Debbie Bestwick recognised that, "Everyone is expecting us to go out there and buy lots of studios" following the success of its IPO, but maintained that the publisher's current strategy was working well enough that this was not necessary.

The acquisition of Yippee Entertainment is partially driven by Team17's plans to recruit more developers from the North West of England.

Many Positives: Overcooked series still selling really well and an enhanced version with all DLC and higher-quality graphics is ready for the launch of the new XBox Series X and Playstation 5 consoles, Golf With Your Friends a big seller, Early Access version of World War 2 first person shooter Hell Let Loose looks outstanding and is improving all the time (100 players at a time), Neon Abyss has had positive feedback and decent sales, Blasphemous is getting rave reviews and growing interest, The Survivalists is being developed in-house and should be very popular, the gameplay in upcoming Hokko Life looks similar to Animal Crossing but you won't need a Switch, Greak: Memories of Azur looks to be a beautiful and interesting puzzle platformer, more games lined up than in any previous year etc.

Interesting week coming up for gaming shares. Weds sees the Final EOY results update for Frontier Developments - who I also have shares in - already marked out as near the upper range of expectations. They also have a great line up of games for the next 24 months but price has risen a lot recently. Then Thursday sees Team17 release a mid-year Trading update. Trickier one as they have been more cautious about recent Covid sales and some releases in the first half of the year have not been big sellers. The share price has dropped though so I think that any disappointing news (relative to FDEV) has more or less been priced in. Hopefully their good management of older releases' sales, upcoming schedule and a perhaps overly-cautious previous update will see the shares north of 700 again.
