builders holding up surprisingly well today so far and closed my BWY short for a fairly modest profit . BKG especially is only down a touch at the moment . the mining stocks are the ones being pounded and opened sharply down .

squires- smile ! Omg and his like are probably long term holders who never hedge as i do when a downturn looks quite likely and hence his stupid comment . Those on this thread who forecast 140 are proably the wise ones as chartwise 140 is a support level . Let's see what monday brings and might be smart to short unless TW and the builders open sharply lower which seems likely .

Arja talks the talk but does he know what he is doing? I think he's just lonely and is looking for a friend :) on this thread.

tlobs2:I was born and brought up in Chester, now in Dorset, so not up to date on leaf count. ;-)
Your post reflects my own thoughts, except for last paragraph.
May be right or wrong, the only sure thing is Estate agents paint rosy image to get you on their books.
Mate of mine buys/does up/sells flats/houses was told same couple of months back..then returned to agent asking 'where are all these buyers you spoke of".
I believe his contracts have no minimum/fixed term, so he can change agents when they don't perform.

Back to first point - July and August are known dips in the market, therefore subtle percentage differences in low volume months cannot be accurately representative of the bigger picture. IMO :-)

dow fell like a stone and glad I am amaateur who has a short as a hedge against the paper loss in my TW shares, unlike gbh2 and raffles who are the professionals . But hoping the building stocks are not hammered too much on monday .

My post not directed at you gbh2 but someone called arja who posted the quite ludicrous statement "I have just been shorting it as a kind of a hedge to cut my holding cost"

gbh2- I just see it as a way to reduce cost of my holding as it not a naked short . Maybe you hold stock too .

Nothing to do with holding cost, but it made a couple of hundred for me this morning and I don't put on more £20 a point.

You can earn big money shorting, also lose big money if you get it wrong and stop losses need to be rigid, i don't do it myself..

Like can somebody ... other than arja ... please tell me how shorting something is supposed to cut your holding cost and earn you a modest profit ????

Thats just capitulating and bailing out at the bottom in my book !

Amateurs all over these threads ...

raffles - just took my modest profit . Yes , easy in hindsight to know that a good short at 165 or even 170.
