Nurdin, I'm sure everybody here would agree with you, probably share price would too if they weren't playing the corporate game.

It always surprises me that companies like SGI don't get taken out. How much would the brand alone be worth to somebody like Ebay with a mkt cap of about $50b ? I know the shares are tightly held but everybody has their price - I'd accept £2 a share !!!

cheers ukhawk et al..seen the forecast now.I think share price are 10-15% out in their pretax estimates..saving something for the company to shout about imo.
Pretax will come in at around £2.3m or better. Will dig up this post at the year end if you like :o)

yep I posted the link earlier 1.9mil is their target. It was Richard Ratner of Seymour Pearce. Good expoosure thus far.

Now we only need abramovich to place a few stamp orders with SGI and we're laughing ;)

All as we know...no one has mentioned brokers expectations for the full year though.Knowing share price they might tweak numbrs up slightly and then expect SGI to beat them handsomely!

Same sort of thing in the FT....

Stanley Gibbons to pay maiden dividend
By Andrea Goddard
Financial Times; Jul 31, 2004

Stanley Gibbons is to pay its first dividend after reporting an 86 per cent jump in pre-tax profit in the first half of 2004.

The Aim-traded online stamp and collectibles exchange set its pay-out at 0.5p, together with a special dividend of 8p, after pre-tax profit rose from £324,000 to £603,000 on turnover of £4.6m (£3.8m).

Paul Fraser, chairman, said: "We continue to make excellent progress with our strategy and the momentum in our investment department should bear further fruit in the second half. We look forward to an exciting second half and the further development of Stanley Gibbons as an international brand."

The shares rose 7p to 96p yesterday.Andrea Goddard

Indeed, hard work but fun sums it up....err, you are talking about women, right ?! ;)

I bought in early doors on Friday, when the excellent results indicated a chart breakout was also likely....wern't you paying attention, I was posting on here all bloody day! ;)

Here's my strategy, as things currently stand:

mad4IT - 30 Jul'04 - 12:44 - 1546 of 1569 edit

popgunn

fwiw, I intend to hold my shares for the divi, then buy more shares on the XD day, or soon after (depending on how the MMs play it) when we'll undoubtedly see a fall of some kind. This is a quality company and I think any retracement on XD day will be short lived and should present a good buying opportunity for existing and fresh investors.

Hi xdavid - As you can see, the chart breakout, backed up by excellent results, was the catalyst for me to take a longer term trading position, despite the generally prohibitive spread on SGI. I shall execute my strategy as discussed above, unless I see a better way to maximise my profit.

Later m8.

From the Times:

PHILATELY-PHILES

A boom in philately has seen the prices of some vintage stamps double in the past five years. This month an 1882 £1 watermarked stamp, valued at £32,000 in 1999, sold for £65,000. A 1d black, valued at £6,500 in 1999, is now on the market for £16,000. Stanley Gibbons produces a Stamp Index which charts the prices of the 100 most commonly traded stamps in the world. Last year it rose 15 per cent. One reason is investors' frustration at poor returns elsewhere. Nostalgia also plays a part, with babyboomers returning to their childhood hobby. And there is evidence stamp-collecting is taking off again among young people too. On web auction site eBay, stamps rank as the third biggest seller.

I bought a stamp at an auction that SG don't have !!!

The catalogue states said stamp has 2 variations of overprint error ...
...(a) with an E looking like an F and
(b) a machine fault giving a double overprint.

I have one with both errors on one stamp. SG states that it may exist but they don't know of one.

tee hee - It was noted as a possible forgery at the auction though !

Still its nice to think I may have the only one in the world.

RE the divi. I wish they would say that all those shareholders 'that are eligible' on the register on record date get the dividend. It is true that if you bought in the 12th, you may be on the register on the 13th, but you will not be eligible.
Whether todays computerised clearing system is clever enough to figure it out I don't know (and I used to work for the biggest settlement company in Europe !), but people who bought cum-divi and did not get the divi can claim it back.
Having said that, about 10 years ago I got a divi when I sold a day before it went XD, and nobody claimed it back.
Chalk one for the gremlins.

Popgunn - would be interested to hear your bearish scenario - always good to try and get ahead or at least understand what the MM's are up to.
----------------------------------------------

That was me Gregory, (I was addressing popgunn at the top of my post.)

I think it's best I don't go into details just yet, as it probably wont happen, therefore I don't want to confuse the issue and also spook fellow holders unnecessarily.

I'll keep an eye on the MMs and only report what I see. Hopefully it'll be a moot point for us to discuss after the XD date. ;)

Hi nurdin! - Good to see you're prospering......though you wont be prospering for long if your Mrs keeps spending your profits! ;)

Still, hopefully SGI will provide you (and the rest of us) with plenty more profits soon.

(NB: Like you, I'm itching to buy PGB again, but the knife is still falling atm. However, it'll move up quickly when it eventually turns, so I'm watching L2 closely.)

Regards

Itchy mad!

Bought these some time ago and happy with the rise.
Just been looking at my old stamp album.
Back in the old days...some 20 years ago, I only collected Queen Victoria..Penny Blacks, Penny reds. Wonder how much they are worth now.
Dont have the elusive Plate 77 Penny red, but have the rest plus a big stack of penny Blacks.
