To me the starting gun re takeover has been fired by Newcrest.IMHO.

Was there a Board Meeting to approve the Franco Nevada transaction or was it an Executive decision.Looks like BHP and Newcrest were not involved.

The article by AFR is quite something. As pob69 says BHP was not directly quoted, although probably off the record. Obviously they cannot be the instigator because they must be seen to be reactive only once any takeover action has commenced until they can do whatever they want in October/or if someone makes a bid first.

Then why did Newcrest buyout the Fruta del Norte gold off take agreement. Was it to show the Government they are really big players ? They own 32% of Lundin Gold the owner of Fruta del Norte.

Wonder if they have got some big institutional holdings of SOLG that will go with them. Looks like they would be comfortable owning a larger % of SOLG.....Again IMHO.

I'm happily continuing to hold despite the permits and ministers comments / demeanour and NH reaction. This 150m wouldn't have been put up likely so what's still not to like.

Barring takeover this will hover between 24-30p.
I understand where Mknight is coming from - personally I wasn’t a fan of the mining minister either. Looks like permits are a while away but NM is doing his best to bat off the hostile takeover bids.
To me it looks like Newcrest are focussed on GGP’s Haveria as a replacement for their Telfer mine due to end in 2021, and are waiting for BFS to be completed here before any takeover.
BHP remain favourites but barring permits SOLG won’t reach true potential.
I’m happy to hold for the long game.

For me it was the webinar with the minister of mining . When NM started to push him on the permit issue i realised that they had not been recieved and we could not drill any new sites . I then realized that the Sharprice was at around 26p and the growth of it without a takeover could be slow with maybe a maximum of 40pish . I was up around 200k so i just thought enough is enough . Throw in the talk of a referéndum and i decided to sell .

I knew we would get the cash because NM told him we have the money so i sold into the news .

I want to make it clear i honestly believe most of the 13 projects will be tier 1 or near tier 1 but if you cant drill them then whats the point .

Let me just add i wish only good for all the shareholders and hope the permit issue will be sorted so i can reinvest as soon as possible but i will not buy any until that issue is sorted .

Mk, it depends on your timeline. The backstop is going to production with Alpala. There might be a short-term hit to the price but there might also be a full blown takeover. Ultimately, there's unlikely to be a loss against the current price. The only real danger is losing support from both your key shareholders.

It's just I don't understand the u turn as a matter of days all was good and this was flying with high confidence from you, they never had the permits then so why change of heart - no malice in message just trying To understand as thought you shared my confidence

It will be good to watch from the sidelines .

Could go either way .

For once i wouldnt want to guess which way .

All good stuff ..

NM putting back the webinar would suggest possible good news on the way imho .

It's a phoney war at the moment. Akin to football supporters taunting each other on the terraces. Looking forward to seeing how it plays out. Getting the main players animated is a great achievement.

Newcrest will not sell any shares IMHO. Do you think that's their style? They will do the deal with Cornerstone and put the cat amongst the pigeons....In some circles/places there is no love lost for Nick Maher....Remember BHP first bought their shares from Guyana Goldfields.....Guess what by the way... have you seen that Guyana Goldields are on the end of a takeover bid too....

No i am not bashing just commenting on events . And no i dont want to get back in until permits are issued and i can understand what exactly is going on .

There could be a bid from BHP tomorrow you never know . The market will no doubt point us in the right direction sooner or later .

Brave move by NM seems to have upset Newcrest and BHP . They could drop the share price very quickly if they wanted to just by selling a few shares . I hope for all that hold this does not happen .

Not sure what is going to happen , its all getting way to complicated for my little brain .

Down 12% on Tmx as i type .

This article is not company specific but interesting nevertheless in the current M&A environment Solgold SOLG $SOLG $SOLG.L $CGP #cascabel #ecuador

"....CEO Henry also said BHP could act on the right M&A opportunity but focus is on organic growth."

At the same virtual Bank of America conference, the chief executive of rival Rio Tinto Jean-Sébastien Jacques said he saw more potential acquisition opportunities in the current environment.

"We do also see the potential for new opportunities to emerge," Jacques said in a speech at the conference..... We are keeping a watching brief on M&A. Right now, the market is finding it difficult to value companies and the COVID-19 recovery pathway is not clear,"

Newcrest could jump at any moment.....as pob69 has said above they have offered comments that they are not happy (that is a major.comment from your blockcaving partner)....they could make their move on Cornerstone....gain 15% of Alpala and 9% of SOLG and together with their own 13% shareholding .....join with BHP and buy some in the market from institutions....they could get to 50% and have the 15% in Alpala as well....NM would be snookered......50p in the market would get some attention.....probably get the whole caboodle for 75p

AFR is a great read and the article is very interesting so worth paying for sub.

I would say that Newcrest offered comments. Actually BHP were not quoted (the headline was a little mischevious) so maybe they are talking (as are maybe others)...?

The more NM can demonstrate that he has a path to mine it himself, then the more the big boys will have to stump up if they want to take the whole thing. It's well known that big miners are on the hunt for copper, this big pot of copper comes with a load of gold to help things along. Just how long can NM hold the takeover bullies off?

Yes exactly.....that's why BHP and Newcrest can do something about it because they can get out of the Franco Nevada deal for not too much money within the next few weeks....IMHO

PS - by signing up to a high-cost loan that has left the big miners ''concerned'' and ''disappointed" -
Quite ! - its the poison pill I mentioned

LT - just a quick thought as I crouch behind the garden shed - the problem is the massive (downward) gearing effect of the 70% project loan we are all assuming. It's repayment (negative) NPV is a fixed amount (about $2bn) and what shareholders see is the margin between that and an NPV which is being eaten into by any streaming deal.
