I'd agree with that, Peter. But the key to unlocking things is the strategic direction. So things like deals, reserves and sorting the compressor issue would all be important in the H1 results - not just the financial performance.

I expected oil to be firm in 2018, but I wouldn't have been prepared to stick my neck out for $80 oil in H1!

Unless it collapses again, which I doubt in the short term, then the cash will come through to the bottom line and it will be much harder for the markets to ignore by the time of the SIA H1 results.

...its another of "those days" today though......peer group up 6-7% but not much happening here. Liquidity still an issue for institutions, though one would think price compensated?

Best bit about the almost 30% rise in share price over the past few weeks is it was completely predictable!

Brent at $78.80 tonight, partly on the back of Middle East tensions.........what will happen to sentiment with an $80 handle?.....First +10% day was today.......there will be another fairly shortly, I think.

Thanks chaps. Of course SOCO set out that stall of capital management and shareholder returns some years ago - but it is good to see someone finally notice the "yield of a major but with growth opportunities" pitch.Shell, incidentally, has put on over 20% in the last two months....from a base that was roughly double its lows. So there is still some catchup to come.

ee,

FT article context :

UK listed oil groups follow majors’ lead

Sylvia Pfeifer, Energy Correspondent MAY 11, 2018

First-quarter earnings from the world’s oil majors underlined the mood of optimism in the industry, with BP and Royal Dutch Shell both cheering investors with stronger than expected results.

A combination of higher crude prices and falling costs is helping to repair balance sheets after the brutal downturn. BP this month floated the idea of increasing its dividend for the first time since oil prices crashed four years ago after announcing a 71 per cent increase in first-quarter earnings.

However, it is not just the integrated oil and gas groups that are focusing on capital discipline and returns to shareholders. Several of their smaller counterparts are following suit. Industry executives concede that in the previous oil cycle of exploration and production, companies failed to return capital to shareholders and chased growth at any cost. Today’s focus by investors is on companies with reserves, production and cash flow...........

Below are three cap oil and gas companies that have production and are focused on shareholder returns.

Linton5, take a look at Seplat Petroleum. Looks very cheap but has country risks as production is based in Nigeria. I own shares in the company.
