Bank plea after cash point blunder

Customers are being asked to hand back the money

A faulty cash point dished out extra money for nearly one and a half hours to its customers in a south Wales town before bank officials spotted the problem.
The Lloyds TSB bank in Market Street, Ebbw Vale, developed a technical problem which meant that an extra £10 was handed out during every transaction.

For every transaction that was carried out, the customer got the extra money

Customers who benefited from the bonus are now being written to, in the hope they will return the extra notes.

Bank officials have refused to disclose how much extra money was handed out but have said that the cash point was turned off as soon as the problem was noticed.

"It was taken out of service and the engineers came to fix it," said a spokeswoman.

"This was the only machine affected in the town.

"For every transaction that was carried out, the customer got the extra money."

The bank is now appealing to people who used the busy machine on Friday to give the money back.

"We know which customers received the additional money because of the cash point's records.

"We are relying on people's honesty to give the money back to us.

Rare event

"We have written to the customers to tell them about what happened and are asking them to return the extra money."

The bank, which has two branches in the town, said that engineers have identified the technical problem in the machine.

The spokeswoman said that the problem of cash points giving out too much money happened very rarely.

"This type of thing doesn't happen very often, its usually once very five years or so," she added.

What does she mean, "usually"?

Morning all

Still here after a very grim 36hrs gastric yerky thing. At first we thought we might have given everyone at the Christening food poisoning. Turns out one of the nephews has something going round his school.

Covered tox earlier for +130pts. I imagine a few others got more and bigger, well done. Thanks Cat for going on about it so much :-)

Going to try a bit of toast and see what happens.

Regards
Rob

Matthewa, sadly HTL is not on CMC's lists, which is actually probably a good thing, cos they'd only rip one off on the enormous spread they'd offer. :-)

Cannot help but think this is a false rally to sell into, nothing really has changed since yesterday.

Until the issue with Saddam is resolved, and from the UK viewpoint we say stuff the Euro (sorry folks) I think markets will continue to fall. Indeed any problems with credit and banks could take loads off the index.

One good peice of news though, the Microsoft deal re its X-Box and twt, ntl, and BT may help the telecoms. With twt it may lend support to the argument we should not be treated like marconi in any debt for equity swap as there is now the potential for twt to gain many more clients. The X-Box is acentral part of Microsofts business stratergy, and Bill is one of a small number of people who could bail twt out from the small change in his pocket. Just a thought
