If the master believes that the continual operation of AIS might compromise the safety or security of his/her ship, or where security incidents are imminent, the AIS may be switched off. This might be the case in sea areas where pirates and armed robbers are known to operate. Unless it would further compromise the safety or security, if the ship is operating in a mandatory ship reporting system, the master should report this action and the reason for doing so to the competent authority.The master should however restart the AIS as soon as the source of danger has disappeared. If the AIS is shut-down, static data and voyage related information remains stored. Restart is done by switching on the power to the AIS unit. 23/4/2018 19:00 | I think there are two points to make here: 1. Since the issue of the RNS there has been no evidence on the AIS system of a Heavy Load Vessel leaving the UAE area bound for Nigeria. It is unlikely that we have all (meaning all of us who are watching the AIS system) missed such a move. 2. There has been no AIS evidence of any activity in or near the Ororo location. Even if the Force is not transmitting an AIS signal, it is fairly sure that we would be able to pick up the HLV or other support vessels i.e. anchor handlers and/or supply ships, if there was anything going on there. 23/4/2018 17:51 | Rig was contracted to RAK Gas just prior to Sirius' charter. This finished the start of April and even if it left the same day would only just be entering Nigerian waters let alone drilling. It would have been impossible to get the rig from UAE to Nigeria without there being an HLV (semi-sub heavy lift vessel) tracked on its journey. There are only a handfull of HLVs in the world and these are easily tracked on sites like Marine traffic, this includes an archive of their past journies. There are no HLVs within two weeks sailing now, so there is now a minimum of 5 weeks before a rig reaches Nigeria assuming one of the HLVs sets sail as we speak. | minichris | |
