Gavin ThomasSo, it takes 227 tonnes of raw material to make one EV battery and 5,000 gallons of water to extract 10kg of Lithium...enough to make one EV battery. For 220 million EV's, that's 5e10 (50,000,000,000) tonnes of raw material excavated, transported and refined, and 1.1e12 (1.1 trillion) gallons of water used up...Imagine the damage to the environment...I think I'll stick to my ICE car - much better for the planet.https://www.greencars.com/greencars-101/how-EV-batteries-are-made.. And no, a heat pump won't save you money on running costs. To be cheaper to run than a gas boiler a heat pump requires a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of at least 3.5 – ie it pumps 3.5 times as much heat energy into the homes as it consumes in electrical energy. But the government's own field trial revealed that heat pumps currently installed have an average COP of 2.94, falling dramatically on the coldest days.... Daily Telegraph

Jrp: Middle East (no offence to anyone) is two a penny compared to Ukraine war. So far about 400,000 to 500,000 people have died (or had life changing injuries) in the war (either Russian or Ukrainian)...
Gazza, really is just a large city with countryside surrounds. There is no comparison in the global economic effect of the two (no offence).

@NetC: I suspect the prospect of Ukrainian war has already been overtaken by the Middle-East blowing up big-time; yet again.

Another big merger across the pond....Chevron has agreed to buy US oil and gas producer Hess Corporation in a $53bn all-stock deal, doubling down on its bet that demand for fossil fuels will remain robust for decades to come. The deal values Hess's equity at $53bn and gives the company an enterprise value, including debt, of $60bn. It is the latest step in the consolidation of the US energy sector after ExxonMobil acquired Pioneer Natural Resources earlier this month for an enterprise value of $64bn.

Jr: That is a good point but suppose the Ukraine war ends within 2 years (when Labour get in)...

Surely we will have a peace dividend and the entire FTSE will rise loads?

Not saying Ukraine war will end within two years but it might, its already looking like stalemate.

The man running Britain's gas network has said the country will need fossil fuels to prevent blackouts for decades to come despite calls for the Government to begin shutting off the pipes.Jon Butterworth, chief executive of National Gas, said a growing reliance on intermittent power sources such as wind and solar meant Britain would be increasingly reliant on gas to make up for shortfalls when renewable energy sources are not generating power.Mr Butterworth said: "In 2022, the wind didn't blow enough or at all for 262 days. And in those 262 days, we would have had rolling blackouts, or a full blackout across the UK if it wasn't for gas.".. Daily Telegraph

ADG/4207 'The effect of the buybacks is now coming into its own imvho
Not a fan initially, at the time would have preferred dividends but now thinking otherwise'

Same as my position. I've also become more +ve on buy-backs as the apparent Labour lead grows. If Labour get in, anything that can be taxed allegedly to somehow benefit 'hard working families' will be. Any sector associated with big undustry and 'greed' will be first in line. Divis from such industry will be a bulls-eye on the target.

Skinny/4206: 'jrphoenix - the all time high is/was 22/05/2018 @2,844.50p'

Are you sure? Don't get me wrong I'm happy to be corrected but the Yahoo price chart shows 2755p as the high in the week commencing 20/5/18. That's with the timeline set to Max and Full Screen then reading the box at upper/left with Open/High/Low/Close/Volume and so on. I've long assumed the High there is a weekly high; now I'm wondering if it's just the day of 20/5/18 which would be much less useful!

Electric cars risk becoming effectively uninsurable as analysts struggle to put a price on battery repairs, the researcher for the car insurance industry has said.Jonathan Hewett, chief executive of Thatcham Research, the motor insurers' automotive research centre, said a lack of "insight and understanding" about the cost of repairing damaged electric car batteries was pushing up premiums and resulting in some providers declining to provide cover altogether.Electric cars can be particularly expensive to repair, costing around a quarter more to fix on average than a petrol or diesel vehicle. Experts have previously warned electric vehicles are being written off after minor bumps because of the cost and complexity of fixing their batteries.... Daily Telegraph

1. - really? What bit don’t you get?
Market cap is THE most relevant metric end of - actual share price is only half the story as it, multiplied by the shares in issue dictate the market cap - an all time high share price is only psychological milestone and that’s a fact - - mkt cap is ultimate and most meaningful measure (unless you don’t understand how it works - which I am not suggesting for one moment)
