20/9/2023 07:30 | Suella Braverman said the Government will not "save the planet by bankrupting the British people" over net zero as Rishi Sunak draws up plans to water down his green pledges. The Home Secretary would not be drawn on the details of which measures could be changed or ditched, but insisted the Government remained "absolutely committed" to hitting the target of net zero emissions by 2050. ... 19/9/2023 10:40 | 11:32AMBrent crude hits $95 as oil boss predicts $100Oil is probably is heading for the $100 mark soon amid tightening supplies, the boss of Chevron has said.Brent crude has topped $95 a barrel today, putting it at its highest level since November last year.Mike Wirth, chief executive of the second-largest US oil company, told Bloomberg TV prices are "certainly moving in that direction".Brent futures, the international crude benchmark, have jumped almost 12pc in the past three weeks amid strong demand and cuts to supply by oil powerhouses Saudi Arabia and Russia. Wirth has held a bullish view on oil for some time. In March, he cited a combination of dwindling spare production capacity around the world and the anticipation that China's economy will pick up speed again. He also forecast that oil would reach $100 in January 2022, citing geopolitical risks. At the time, prices were trading just under $87. By March, they topped $130 after Russia's invasion of Ukraine. .. Daily Telegraph | xxxxxy

17/9/2023 07:46 | SIR At last the truth about the real cost, unreliability and insecurity of offshore wind farms ("Electricity from wind isn't cheap and it never will be", Matt Ridley, Comment, September 10). [Try to Access] When will the Government face reality and give its full support to Rolls-Royce's small modular nuclear reactors, thereby making the UK more energy-secure while investing in British manufacturing and jobs?Or will it continue to rely on buying energy from France, which, 18 months ago, responded rapidly to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing energy crisis by upgrading its nuclear energy facilities?Alan LyneLlandelio, Carmarthenshire... 14/9/2023 13:39 | Last week I revisited the Honda dealer in Exeter with a view to replacing my 7 year old CRV which is running fine.I told the agent the only resdon i was planning to replace was to ease my concience over air pollution so all he had to was to explain to me why a new hybrid delivering 42mpg was more environmentally friendly than my existing CRV which delivers 48-50mpg.After a long chat and a couple of coffees I decided that the most environmentally responsible thing for me to do was to have my existing car cleaned. The agent agreed with me!! | kkclimber56
14/9/2023 12:27 | A few other things on EV’s… They aren’t (mostly) actually very good Nor practical in many ways Nor have an environmentally friendly overall footprint over their lifetime And need to be tethered to a charger for long periods (unless you have 3 phase in your home) And use fossil fuels to generate their fuel in many cases… (anybody aware of the efficiencies of generating electricity with fossil fuels then transmission losses over the grid etc)… EVs (mostly) look stupid…… never understood why many manufacturers (not all) make an EV stand out with silly childish design cues And what about disposal of the spent lithium ion batteries…. ? There is talk of recycling them but the technology isn’t really there yet….. economically it isn’t sustainable yet and needs even more subsidies What about when the batteries reach the end of their lifetime - (in some cases 5 to 10 years) anybody priced a new Tesla battery pack recently…̷ | adg
14/9/2023 11:55 | I heard from a presentation of a miner recently that supplied heavily to conventional auto manufacturers (so a minor caveat emptor is required) that he thought that there is just not the investment in EV mining resources to convert everyone to EV. Plus the fact that nobody's electricity grid is up to the job of charging all the supposed EV revolution, nor is there sufficient energy generation. And have you seen the price of EVs? Not exactly "people cars". Governments have two choices. Either abandon the aggressive policies towards EV, and let things take a more natural course (whatever that might be), or push ahead regardless and see significant economic decline and hardship. | blippy3
14/9/2023 11:24 | From hero to net zero. It would make a snappy new motto for BP and serve as a painful reminder to anyone from the fossil fuel industry that embracing the green dream is fraught with risk. It would certainly beat all the other silly slogans that the company conjured up under Bernard Looney. There was the rhythmical "performing while transforming", a boast that Looney fudged by performing a screeching u-turn on a promise to move rapidly away from oil and gas amid growing pressure from disenchanted shareholders. A habit of referring to the "energy trilemma" industry-waffle for a requirement to produce energy that is secure, affordable and lower carbon was equally nauseating especially at a time when millions of households were battling a genuine "trilemma": spiralling food prices, record petrol costs, and rocketing energy bills, at least two of which could be laid squarely at the door of the oil industry...
