10 of the 13 Brokers who go public with their recommendations are now neutral on SCTN.Current price still yielding 3.4%,and cover 1.5 seems not unreasonable price even without bids.Like most (I suspect ) I am holding still, but wouldn't take much more of a rise to make me jump.

Looking a bit toppy now after Friday's hefty rise. Around 620p would be a good level for short-termers to get out at (I expect many have already done so)

The ING rating seems surprising ; a reasonable valauation in the complete absense of any takeover possibility perhaps, but...

Foster's and John Smith's brewer Scottish & Newcastle led blue-chips higher today with a rise of 39p to a record 624½p as one City player gave its blessing to a bid by S&N associate Carlsberg. Broker ING says in its latest review of the European brewing sector that only two merger scenarios would make sense, one of them being the Danish brewer and Scottish & Newcastle, the latter of which boasts a price tag of £5.5 billion. The two companies have a joint venture in Russia and are already firmly established as Britain's biggest brewer.
Hopes of a bid for S&N were further fuelled by Carlsberg signalling possible acquisition plans via moves to change its shareholder structure. The controlling Carlsberg Foundation wants to reduce its holding in the brewer from 51.3% to 25%.
Broker SEB Enskilda described the planned changes as an 'offensive move' designed to allow Carlsberg to acquire Scottish & Newcastle's 50% stake in the Russian joint venture, BBH, should it come up for sale.
Dresdner Kleinwort responded by raising its rating on S&N and Carlsberg from reduce to hold. The broker has also lifted its target for S&N from 545p to 580p and Carlsberg from 535 kroner to 585 kroner, and says a deal between the two companies is now possible. It says the move by the foundation means Carlsberg can double its shares in issue and become a consolidator. Curiously, ING reckons S&N shares are already overvalued and has therefore repeated its sell rating with a target of 526p.

Once again I see that SAB will be a little poorer should they decide to pounce now, as will BBJL and his mates (does he have any?) if they are daft enough to be still short.

On the rumour mill, I note that Thomson Financial has turned yet another "no comment" - this time from Diageo - into a denial.

In case you wern't already aware, today's surge in the SCTN share price is on the back of news that Carlsberg plans to radically alter its share structure, thus making a takover/merger more feasible (family controlled, it is currently almost impossible for Carlsberg to jump on the consolidation bandwagon)

Seems a lot of "background noise" this am, despite this denial.

SCOTTISH & Newcastle's senior directors have assured investors it is "business as usual", playing down the recent flurry of takeover speculation surrounding the brewing giant.

Speaking at the group's annual shareholder meeting in Edinburgh, chief executive Tony Froggatt said the group was not in talks and claimed the "background noise in the market is no distraction".

That's about the size of it, I reckon.

However, the point I was trying to make is that SAB have not publicly denied anything, and that Thomson Financial is not their official mouthpiece, merely just one of a long line of media sources.
