24/4/2007 16:08 | Musings on the recent sctn action. Assuming, as has long been mooted, SABM are interested in part or all of sctn. A SABM offer 710p would almost certainly be successful. Even the recent past share price of 500p to 550p was thought by many to have a bid element. SABM are reluctant to bid 710p and think sctn is worth less, at least to them, but think that a bid of say 625p to 650p would not be successful. SABM think/hope that, in time, the share price will fall back and a bid of max. 650p, be successful. Are there any other likely interested parties? | roby37
23/4/2007 15:38 | Still no reply to my question from SABMiller. You will see above they told me to expect one within 72 hours. So it is a 'no comment' then lol | coogar
23/4/2007 10:50 | Funny , looking at the FT report , that their plans should be disrupted by an unexpected rise in the SCTN share price.Isn't that normally what happens when there are bid talks ? Or did they expect perfect security? | wad collector
23/4/2007 06:37 | ft reports bid from dge and sab jointly for sctn at 710p | hijeff

18/4/2007 11:40 | AO 1) I have been 'long' from 388p so rather than hurting am still very much enjoying the ride 2) Thomson Financial is NOT the horses mouth. However, if the report is factual it appears that SAB did not in fact 'deny' anything, rather chose its words very carefully | coogar
17/4/2007 13:15 | BBJL - GNI technical research positive with a target of 600p and a stop on close below 570p | bruce meinhoff
17/4/2007 08:40 | there's not a prayer someone would pay anything around these levels thats why the short was a no brainer, still have 550 target. Wish i could find out who starts these lucrative rumours, did well on the other suspect last week, SSL. | bigbobjoylove
16/4/2007 17:31 | BBJL You did well to hold your nerve at the 610 level! It looks like going xd was a good moment for an unfounded rumour. Our agendas are rather different and I shall be looking to add if the yield approaches 4%. | roby37
16/4/2007 13:33 | nice, both shorts well in profit, target 550p, it's done well to stay up but after all deepdown it's still an awful overpriced dog ;-) | bigbobjoylove
12/4/2007 13:07 | no probs at all being long - been long for 3 years so today's price still looks good | john3419
12/4/2007 10:17 | Long here at these levels. Hedge funds loading up I hear. | bruce meinhoff
12/4/2007 09:28 | Yes point taken but SAB has been the favourite and strongest rumour and fired the share price share price up to 625p. In my mind a Carlsberg deal would probably make sense. For now will stay short, there must be a lot of longs hurting out there now. AO | a0148009
12/4/2007 09:06 | AO - the rumour may still have sone substance, its just not SABMiller thats all ! | goldstar
12/4/2007 09:03 | Here it is straight from the horses mouth: LONDON (Thomson Financial) - SABMiller PLC today dismissed rumours it is planning to launch a takeover bid for Scottish & Newcastle. Speaking during a conference call this morning for the company's full-year trading update, CFO Malcolm Wyman refused to comment on other listed companies. "There is a lot of speculation in the market place and it does seem they are old rumours bubbling up and resurfacing again," he said. Wyman said the group finds the Western European beer market "singularly unattractive". "Volumes are declining and whilst it is a big value pool, it is under significant pressure not only in the United Kingdom but in Western Europe as well," he added. Scottish & Newcastle shares fell back 7-1/2 pence to 591 pence this morning, having risen some 15 pct over the last two weeks on persistent takeover speculation. simopn.meads@thomson sjm/jr | a0148009
12/4/2007 08:35 | Somewhat relieved on my short position after seeing them up to 625p !! AO | a0148009
11/4/2007 11:39 | don't try and makes sense of it mate - this is a 'toy' for the big traders to make money at the moment - the swings are huge... even when the volumes aren't suggesting this is classic kick the ball around situation. | jezboy1
10/4/2007 18:12 | still baffled | john3419
10/4/2007 08:06 | Now I'm baffled. Over the weekend the newspapers mentioned SAB Miller preparing a bid of over £7 per share. What happens today? - price falls. What am I missing? | john3419
09/4/2007 14:47 | DOW JONES NEWSWIRES SABMiller PLC (SAB) is mulling a bid for Scottish & Newcastle PLC (SCTN.LN) at around 712 pence a share, according to a report in the U.K.'s Sunday Express. Such a bid would value the brewing group at around GBP6.5 billion, the newspaper reported. The paper, citing sources close to SABMiller, said the bid would be a break-up bid. The newspaper said SABMiller would attempt to sell the U.K. arm to Diageo PLC (DEO) and that the French operations would also be sold, possibly also to Diageo. The newspaper also reported that Carlsberg (CARL-A.KO) would buy Scottish & Newcastle's share in the two companies' BBH venture, which operates in Russia and some of its neighbors. SABMiller would retain Scottish & Newcastle's international operations, according to the report. The paper said JPMorgan Chase is advising SABMiller on the approach. 09/4/2007 09:03 | Scottish &Amp; Newcastle India's UB has first right of refusal if Scottish & Newcastle up for sale-report MUMBAI (Thomson Financial) - Scottish & Newcastle's possible takeover bid by global rivals like SABMiller could lead to first right of refusal by India's United Breweries, in which S&N holds 37.5 pct stake, Indian daily The Economic Times reported. International media yesterday reported SABMiller could make a bid to acquire S&N for 12.8 bln usd. A top UB official confirmed that the company has the first right of refusal under a set of complex conditions involving S&N's future in global consolidation, the newspaper said. UB sources were quoted as saying that they are closely monitoring the development. The report said UB Group chairman Vijay Mallya would opt for the first right of refusal if SABMiller had a serious chance in mopping up S&N operations. Mallya will keep his options open if S&N was to consider a proposal from Anheuser-Busch, InBev or Heineken, the other potential bidders, the report added. SAB Miller is the principal rival of Vijay Mallya's beer empire in India and is closely tracking with 38 pct market share compared to UB's 45 pct. tf.TFN-Europ_newsdes vsr/aku | waldron
