24/11/2016 12:07 | Families face a worse squeeze on their living standards over the next five years than they suffered in the wake of the financial crisis, as Brexit slows the economy and Conservative welfare cuts bite, according to a new report. Analysis of Wednesday’s autumn statement by the Resolution Foundation thinktank suggests average earnings are set to grow only half as rapidly as in the austerity years after the economic crisis. At the same time, living standards will be undermined by higher inflation and ongoing welfare cuts. ----- Lord Willetts, as he now is, until 2015, Tory MP and Treasury Minister and now amongst other things, Ex Chairman of the Resolution Foundation thinktank ... | leedskier

24/11/2016 07:57 | This could help those hoping to buy at some future date. Countrywide warns of falling demand The UK's largest estate agent group has reported a fall in demand due to changes in stamp duty and uncertainty around the EU referendum. In a trading update, Countrywide said transaction volumes in 2016 were likely to be 6% lower than in 2015, adding: "While too early to say definitively, it is likely that the level of market transactions in 2017 will be lower than 2016." The firm said challenging trading conditions had meant Bank of England mortgage approvals in the third quarter of 2016 were down 12% on last year. The lettings market was also affected by the rush to beat the changes in stamp duty at the end of the first quarter, "resulting in a larger than usual supply of rental properties" and "slowing rental growth". Total group revenue for the nine months ended 30 September 2016 was £558.7m compared with £535.7m in the same period last year. | leedskier

23/11/2016 15:39 | Those who are quick will have noted that Philip Hammond's Autumn Statement was a move firmly to the left, not the right. A One Nation Budget. Tough on poverty and tough on the causes of poverty. Including: Subsidies for affordable house building. Outlawing racketeering by those renting out properties by stopping them transferring their estate agents charges to those those renting. Increasing the tax free threshold and income support for those in work. Pegging fuel duty. Reversing some of Osborne's welfare cuts. add Increasing the minimum wage. | leedskier
