However it is generally acknowledged that aircraft engines are often sold at a loss, and any profit is made in the aftermarket ( servicing and spare parts). Since the book price of a large aero engine may be £15m it is not inconceivable that initial engine sales to prestige customers (where a discount is required to secure the sale) could be at a loss of around £1m per engine.
