QinetiQ starts tests on new Boeing 737
By Tom Mcghie

Last updated at 5:15 PM on 19th February 2012

Britain's top secret QinetiQ defence company will this week start critical tests on the new Boeing 737 at its world-leading wind tunnel in Hampshire.

The success of the multi-billion pound Boeing 737 'Max' project depends on the outcome of four months of tests on its efficiency at take-off and landing speeds.High-speed tests will be done in Seattle.

The aircraft, which is due to come into service in 2017, is expected to be 12 per cent more efficient than the present 737. A new engine and wings with shark-like fins are set to make it significantly more economical to run than its rivals.

In 2004, Boeing agreed a ten-year deal to use QinetiQ's wind tunnels at Farnborough.

Scientists there have built a global reputation, having successfully tested Boeing's 777 series and the Dreamliner.

QinetiQ shares neared a 12-month high on Friday, closing at 148p.

Good to see a 2 yr high ; I am finally averaging in the blue.I think I shall have to be patient here - £2 looks a long way off still. The p/e looks better than the yield - can't see it going much further in the next few months.

Yes tipped by Investors Inteligence today

QinetiQ (QQ/) - broke the 140p range resistance last week. This signalled that the uptrend is about to reassert, especially as this resistance is the major base ceiling (see right). We buy.

Portfolio Update

We open a long in QinetiQ (see above).

Or are they just expressing the fashionable caution of this years interim statements?
Doesn't it just say they don't know what happens next?

From Mail on Sunday today:

QinetiQ tracks the rail thieves with secret boxes that can 'hear' crooks miles away.

Metal thieves who are disrupting rail services by stealing signalling cable are being tackled by QinetiQ, the company that takes its name from James Bond's gadget-maker Q.

Easy target: Britain's railways

The company has developed OptaSense, a technology that turns the fibre-optic cables that run alongside most lines into giant listening devices.
Any noise or disturbance within 11 yards of a fibre-optic cable can be detected, analysed and identified. So an operator in London could tell if someone was walking or digging a hole near a fibre-optic cable buried alongside a track in Darlington.

The defence technology company, based in Farnborough, Hampshire, has high hopes for OptaSense.

QinetiQ believes it will create 1,000 jobs over the next five years – there are just 20 scientists working on the project at present – but will also boost the firm's £1.7billion turnover by more than £100 million.

To transform the fibre-optic cables, which are used for communications, into listening devices, QinetiQ has invented two secret boxes.

-- Low visibility and uncertainty leaves outlook beyond the current year unchanged

Leo Quinn, Chief Executive Officer said: "Rapid execution of our self-help plan is building a stronger QinetiQ. The Group is better focussed on delivering its customers' changing needs, and this is starting to come through in its underlying performance.

"The Board believes that, absent any material change in customer requirements, the Group will exceed its original expectations for the current year by approximately 20%, although market uncertainties mean that visibility beyond the current year remains lower than normal. Our confidence in QinetiQ's ability to build significant value over the medium term is demonstrated by the payment of the interim dividend of 0.9p."

At last - some positive news, perhaps the worst is behind QQ?
