The company makes great play of the fact that thermal coal prices will moderate in the medium term. That’s partly because coking coal miners can switch supplies (to some extent, eg PCI coal) from steel manufacturing to power generation to take advantage of the unprecedented price premium in the thermal market. Extra supply will ultimately depress prices. However, electricity prices would also weaken then. The more important point is that OPG is apparently one of the least indebted power generators in the country, due to OPG targeting deleveraging in recent years. That means they’ll be cost competitive whatever happens to coal prices. And the industry needs high power prices to generate the capital to supply strongly growing power demand as the Indian economy grows. Finally, green energy is not reliable - coal power generators will play an essential role for many years.

I truly believe there is little risk at these levels . At 15- 20p I would not be so brave to buy.

A trading update in May stated that the company had signed a fixed price coal supply agreement with an Indian supplier for 130k tons per annum for 5 years, at a price significantly below international market prices. That was estimated to account for 25-30 per cent of total coal requirements for the current year. Meanwhile output prices increased 63% in the first five months of FY2023 compared with the FY2022 average. My guess is that cashflow in FY2023 H1 has stayed at roughly the same level as a year earlier, while NAV per share has increased sharply due to the aforementioned benefit of a weaker sterling exchange rate.
