04/3/2009 15:44 | at this price nwg is a bargain IMO defensive and perhaps boring but a lot safer than banks or oil companies. the only issues are falling revenues from commercial business, and talk of reduced divis as they borrow less, but overll these have to be one of the safest investments in the world at the moment surely? | ceckyspunt
02/3/2009 10:19 | Gateside Thank you for post 998. If directors & families are buying, ahead of the close season, it can't be too bad. Wish I had some spare cash. z | zeppo
01/3/2009 23:08 | Northumbrian Water bosses pump in cash Fri 27 Feb 2009 LONDON (SHARECAST) - Northumbrian Water's managing director John Cuthbert topped up his stake in the utility group today, spending more than £100,000 on shares. He bought 50,000 at 218.25p a time and now has 237,221. Meanwhile, the wife of finance director Chris Green bought 30,000 shares meaning that Green and 'connected persons' now have 157,679. While water companies are generally seen as defensive during downturns, Northumbrian, which provides water for 2.6m people in the the north east of England and 1.7m in the south east, has seen its share price struggle recently. Earlier this month, it predicted that second half revenues would be down by about £4m from the first half. | gateside

28/11/2008 09:26 | From today's Tempus column in The Times:- A downturn can have unexpected consequences. Take water utilities, commonly considered the corner of the stock market least roiled by recession. Yesterday's first-half results from Northumbrian Water suggest all is not calm. For a start, bad debts are rising, up 10 per cent year-on-year to £20 million. Because water companies are not allowed to pull the plug on defaulting domestic customers, water bills are among the first to be set aside when households are squeezed. Secondly, there are tentative signs that the shutdown or reduced working of factories on its patch is starting to affect demand. At present, the company has seen only a modest impact equivalent to about £1 million on full-year revenues of £700 million but that trend is worth noting given that Northumbrian has a high proportion of industrial customers. However, the company's own utility bills are more significant. Even though wholesale energy costs are now falling, Northumbrian expects to pay £14 million more for power next year as it is obliged to buy forward to protect against volatility. At the interim stage, the company has felt prices 50 per cent higher than last year, which has hit operating costs and taken 12 per cent off profits. That said, Northumbrian's funding position is somewhat better than that of its rivals. The company has the debt financing to take it through to 2011, well into the beginning of the next capital expenditure programme, which starts in April 2010. Taken together with a well-covered dividend, which yields 4.8 per cent at 263¼p, that is reason enough to hold. | alan@bj
27/11/2008 09:31 | These results aren't that bad - at 2.59 surely a buy | mercury123

10/11/2008 15:34 | That is why I was interested if anyone had any info that would explain the upward trend. | yewtrees
10/11/2008 14:40 | hmm you could well be right but one institution I have some knowledge of puts reasonable size buy orders out at the mid price. So when/if they are filled they often show up a sells. Also just a bit cautious of graphs and volume data as an indicator or a companies value as they can only show the past and, by their very nature, not the future. | praipus |
