Disappointing day. Up £1500 on RBS, down £1000 on NWG. Such is life. I'm still holding, I'm sure the bid rumours will resurface again in in the not-too-distant future. This must be a decent 2008 takeover candidate.

well i hold and have been impressed by performance today.i think there will be a bid at some stage and even if they fall back if nothing happens this time its difficult to find a safer share to hold in present air of gloom so i am inclined to stay with it.

With flight to safety affecting NWG, together with M&A rumours, has this further to go, or is the share price toppy?
Views welcomed.

I have held this for over a year as it is a good solid share with the possible talk of take-over all last year. 3 days ago I decided to move my money into Wimpey as there seemed a better chance there of a movement upwards..........sodds bluddy law!!!!! Mind you this takeover talk has gone on for a year so maybe another year before anything comes to light, by that time I hope to be back aboard.....good luck to you all!!!

Northumbrian Water gained 16 to 355¾p amid vague takeover speculation. Dealers pointed to a note from UBS earlier this week which said that Northumbrian was "a high probability take-out candidate within the UK water space" following bids for Kelda and Southern Water towards the end of 2007. The Ontario Teacher Pension Plan owns 26pc of the company and although it could block any deal, UBS thinks it more likely that it would work with any potential bidding consortium.

Talk of a bid for Northumbrian Water sent it up 10 per cent at one stage to a new high of 373½p. The Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan holds 26 per cent, effectively acting as a block to any other predators, although it might bid itself. The shares later subsided to settle around 6 per cent up at 361¼p.

Southern Water was recently sold at a 27% premium (to their regulatory asset value). This was seen as high in the industry but investors can expect a 8%-10% return on their investment each year.

NWG last year only returned 3.3% in dividend to investors.... unless a buyer wants it badly, 30% premium sounds too high.

Excellent, just so long as it doesn't happen before the end of this tax year. I'd prefer an 18% tax charge on my profits rather than 40%.

Any indication of a possible take out price - 30% premium?

yew thanks.

Northumbrian Water is worth buying for fundamental, speculative and defensive reasons. Brokers believe it will be taken over within a year or so and predict a buyer would pay well over the current share price of 339.5p. Buy says the Mail on Sunday.
