28/10/2024 11:38 | So Labour are in the process of creating a homelessness crisis .... The family had lunch with a friend who was a Labour party member and activist, one time local councillor, who used to lecture me about all sorts as if I was a Tory supporter even though he knew I did not like them and had not voted for a while - but I'm a capitalist investor so - politely - was still in need of correction. I did argue with some of the stuff he spouted and was very cynical about the new government, much like the old one. He was completely despondent about what he had helped to vote in and how much they've managed to screw up in only a few months. He seemed as nervous as me about what is coming, though I did comment that the budget might not be as bad as the scaremongering so I would reserve judgement. | aleman
28/10/2024 11:30 | Aleman, I think I've mentioned before that my wife runs a lettings business and has done for 25+ years. A large number of her 'seasoned' landlords are selling up - the Government do not seem to grasp that they are seriously at risk of destroying the private landlord sector. And where do the thousands of tenants live then? | skinny
28/10/2024 11:24 | Good morning. Started sunny, now clouded over mostly. I see we have another surge and slump being caused by government interventions. It's now wonder the economy runs so inefficiently. They just can't stop meddling to cause booms and busts. Locally, we have 50% more houses for sale in our village than I've ever seen before - 45 versus 30, and a low before Covid of just 3. York is about 25% above its previous high of the last decade. More working class areas I know in West Yorkshire are only up marginally. I've been wondering what is causing it and this will be a part: An exodus of landlords ahead of the Budget has driven a surge in home sales, according to new data. New figures from online estate agents Zoopla showed there are currently 306,000 homes in the process of being sold, representing transactions worth a total of £113bn. This is the highest total since Autumn 2020 when a stamp duty “holiday” | aleman
28/10/2024 11:12 | Morning. Grey and cooler here, unfortunatley I still have several AIM shares left, which might explain my descent down the rankings table :-( | malcolm caton
28/10/2024 10:44 | I've just got one AIM share share in my twenty seven and that's NICL , the maker of Vimto. They've been around for donkey's years. | philanderer
28/10/2024 10:26 | Have I mentioned that I avoid AIM! FCRM serves as my reminder! | carpingtris
28/10/2024 10:21 | AIM cancellation for HARL!! The latest to join my pile of UK investments that ended up worthless - perhaps a lesson there! | skinny
28/10/2024 10:17 | Morning everyone. Overcast and breezy, not cold. My oils BP and SHEL getting hammered this morning as Israel didn't bomb the Iranian oil refineries. Just a matter of time I'd have thought. Lots of things to ponder over from freddie's posts. | philanderer
28/10/2024 07:53 | Good Morning. A very mild, bright day yesterday and 16C forecast for today. I lifted some dahlias from large pots yesterday and the soil was bone dry. We've had no significant rain for a while. An update over the weekend seems to be killing my PC's CPU usage. 🙄 | skinny
27/10/2024 22:43 | In the Ukraine things are now rather interesting, it seems the N Koreans are throwing everything into supporting the Russians supplies and armaments and men. On the other hand the South Koreans seem to be in the process of sending men to bolster the Ukrainians. Getting nuts. China? What the true figures are re casualties I do not know but hopefully the Ukrainians are maintaining some degree of asymetricity in the matter. | freddie ferret
27/10/2024 22:01 | One aspect to modern life is that contrary to media propaganda the UK is vastly safer than it used to be, crime is far lower. Perhaps I should give some examples. The Broadwater Estate in Tottenham N London take a walk through it in the late evening or night, no problem. What used to be the N Peckham estate walk through it, no rubbish no needles. The Divis flats in north Belfast all gone as is Tangmere on Broadwater Farm. All these places are now clean tidy and decent with good parked cars. I believe that a lot of the reason for this is the slow slide into a surveillance safety orientated police state. There are advantages but there are drawbacks too. Again the move toward the loss of privacy and phasing out of cash may mean a hit on the black economy and surprise surprise the state may find the overall economy drastically smaller and tax take less. Impediments slow the velocity of circulation of money, it maybe you do not like something but at least it is something that is being done. Privacy is key if people feel inhibited they simply will not do it and money circulation will be less. | freddie ferret
27/10/2024 21:44 | Everyone I know more or less says the same. | freddie ferret
27/10/2024 21:42 | On general society, hollowed out is the best comment I can make. Nothing works as it should. | freddie ferret
27/10/2024 21:36 | I have quite strong views re GBs financial problems. We have the cons that tried to seem socialist with 300billion spent on Covid. Now we have labour that try to square the books with tax rises that will hit the poor and middle earners. However nobody is suggesting removing the tax breaks on ISAs when the capital value exceeds shall we say 5 million or limits the tax breaks on pension pots when the capital value exceeds 10 million. This would hit only the serious rich and very savvy investors where there will be no problem financing a lavish retirement, seems a no brainier for supposedly socialist govt to me. | freddie ferret
27/10/2024 09:42 | Good Morning. A sunny day feeling surprisingly mild. DF has just docked in Madeira. | skinny
26/10/2024 17:29 | Is there a thread for what folk might think of as 'takeover' targets? | carpingtris
26/10/2024 15:49 | NHS get shed loads of money just feel it's poorly utilised and it won't matter how much you give them it'll always struggle.. Companies should be encouraged (perhaps incentivised) to offer more health benefits imo and help reduce NHS burdens. My workplace offers health insurance and onsite occupational health plus visits onsite for bloodwork numbers etc.. spoilt really. But sure plenty others could maybe offer some of those benefits. | carpingtris
26/10/2024 15:28 | Where are all of the Labour voters now? Unless the double edged sword of mass immigration and benefits is addressed, this is nothing more than a sticking plaster! | skinny
26/10/2024 15:27 | Same feeling here having worked since left school and the fact I can now dabble with investments like shares is because I've worked and my choice how I spend my excess income each month!! Labour pi$$ me off.. | carpingtris |
