Looks like the USA was R. Walters (recruitment) worst market in Q4 as it issued a disappointing trading update.

In the Americas, our businesses in South America performed strongly with all markets increasing net fee income by over 20%* year-on-year. Tough market conditions across the US resulted in a significant decline in net fee income.

Why does everyone seem to pretend the USA is doing well when business updates are pretty bad? We do have a consumer profit warning in the UK - Hornby. It's sales are below budget, although still up.

Gas prices are creeping up slightly on predictions of cold weather sweeping down from NW from Sunday, possibly with some coastal snow on that side. Nothing dramatic suggested at the moment - just a couple of degrees below average next week.

It's a bit squally here. I hope it warms up for tonight's game against lowly Rochdale. (A point would see us go 4th.) Currently 5C here. It's 9C to14C in Ireland.

A cold, wet school run. At least there was not much wind.

I nearly bought SHOE at 50p a couple of years ago. What a miss that was. A special dividend takes the total to 17p for this year.

Edit - it's just suddenly turned gusty. I hope that's warmer air arriving.

Good morning.

The US is supposed to be doing better than the UK. Boot Barn and Urban Outfitters managed some modest single figure growth in sales in the US but both had increased store numbers and are supposed to be bouncing back from Covid. Allow for that and supply chain inflation and they join the growing list of US consumer stocks reporting poor results.

Meanwhile, AO World, Sosandar and Shoezone produced good results here today. (AO revenue was down but posted an unsheduled trading update on an improving profit outlook.)

Good Morning.

Ooops :-

We had someone come and quote to replace the kitchen flooring after last Autumn's leak and while he was measuring up, another leak started under the sink - you couldn't make it up!

Three leaks in as many months.!!!

Quite excited atm about the space launch by the UK, long overdue imho. We may have a problem running an empire these days due to the problem of revolting locals, however space offers the potential for great gains for the UK and currently there are no inhabitants to worry about.
Initially it seems material science is the route to monetising space for the UK however with improved material science will come the possibility if a space rope which will allow a vastly cheaper route to getting stuff up into orbit. This stuff might include space mirrors which have the potential to counteracting global warming and provide vast amounts of climate independent solar energy.

I am not happy with the GP service atm. Basically a phone call to 111 or a GP phone consultation does not cut the ice with a chest infection when only a stethoscope will do in order to decide whether there is pneumonia and antibiotics or hospital admission are required.
I am thinking the same as the PM and it may be best to sign up with a private GP (not on an insurance basis). If serious and hospital is required then a trip to Eastern Europe may be required, this is already the best for dentistry.

I reported a water leak 200yds along the road with water pouring down the drain on 29th november. An engineer from Affinity Water rang me back two days later saying he'd located it and the work would be carried out soon. Nothing happened so far except hundreds of thousands of gallons of water wasted.

Tried phoning again today, no answer, just left hanging on with 'will be with you shortly' messages and 'have you considered buying a water butt to save water'

I drove through a good size leak still welling up through the road in a very, very busy main road junction. It's tourism off-season around York as museums shut down for repairs/uprgades/maintenance/etc. in January after the Christmas market shuts. No doubt they'll wait until it all reopens and gets busier before they close the junction for repair - unless the road collapses and turns into a big job!

Up not a lot with a mixed bag again.

A mostly sunny day with a chilly breeze, but reasonably comfortable around lunchtime. We're still not quite hitting the warmer than average temperatures we keep getting promised. The sunny spells, however, are finally bringing bringing on short shoots of snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils and I've seen a few bits of yellow gorse where it overhangs paths. There's no early/winter cherry blossom yet that we often get this month, though there's time if this weather holds. 7.6C after 2.5C.

The wind is keeping gas consumption down.

With 10 weeks of drawdown done and 11 weeks to go, EU gas storage is a very high 83%. With the weather outlook still not showing anything particularly cold, gas prices look likely to fall back to normal soon. In fact, one wonders why prices are still twice normal plus with so much stored, even if they are down 3/4 from peak. We seem to have gas coming out of our ears and consumption reduced by 15-20% thanks to fixing business and domestic payments at higher prices than recent rapidly falling spot rates. About 10% of EU consumption in LNG import capability comes on line at the end of 2023 so there no longer appears to be a problem other than central bankers still thinking we have a problem and running policy way too tight.

I've started getting rid of stocks that have been going nowhere and adding a few more dividend payers.

Poor trading updates in US consumer stocks today include Duluth Holdings (clothes), Lululemon (clothes), Build-a-Bear and Chico's restaurants. US markets are up due to Tech stocks up (e.g. Tesla +8%) on data showing electric cars' share of the US market is up a bit.

ADVFM rather slow today, what I can make out of it the folio looks around break even.
With a red tinge.

The highest riser BERI has well eclipsed BA., the biggest faller. VANL also a material faller.
GACA motoring as well.

Full heating back on again. Feels chilly today, max temp 7C, overcast with showers.

Moody’s Analytics predict that the Bank of England will raise UK interest rates by half a percent in both February and March.

That would lift Bank Rate to 4.5%, for the first time since October 2008, putting more pressure on businesses and households with borrowings.

Moody’s Analytics says:

“With CPI inflation falling to 10.7% in November from 11.1% there is now greater certainty that October likely marked the peak. However, December’s CFO survey adds to the evidence, also apparent in service sector inflation and in private sector wage growth, that domestically generated price pressures are developing persistence.

The BoE will therefore need to remain focused on inflation risks in early 2023 and we expect interest rates to rise to 4.5% by the central bank’s March meeting.”

Why would the B of E invert the yield curve more if inflation is already slowing rapidly? The UK 1-year gilt yield is up 0.12% to 3.44% on hawkish comments from the B of E chief economist, Huw Pill, about inflation persisting yet it is still below Bank Rate, suggesting no need for any more rate rises and even a slight possibility of a cut next. Why are bond markets at odds with the B of E?

I shopped at Morrisons today (very quiet) and spent quite a bit to take advantage of discounts in case they are temporary, e.g. 4 tins of coffee at £3.50 rather than the usual £5+. There were several significant offers on which likely made my typical shop the cheapest it's been for a few months. Is it a one off or are prices now finally falling to where they ought to be in supermarkets (following on from petrol)?

Unlucky MrP. Fwiw I’ve managed to break two fingers and two toes over the years (cricket). When I went to the hospital they had to put one dislocation back in, but other than that it was a lengthy wait for an X-ray and diagnosis but they just sent me home with pain killers and a bandage. Nothing for the toes.

Moderately blue today.
