07/1/2023 10:55 | MrP - you might want to add a comment at the end :- | skinny
07/1/2023 10:49 | Morning All. Sorry to hear about your mum Gateside. 4/7 on the quiz for me. Decent week, damaged by AGL but still +1.78% on the week and a new high for the year :-) Back to work properly on Monday although I have been doing quite bit "at a distance" this week. | mrphil
07/1/2023 09:46 | Thanks gents for the kind words.wllm - put my portfolio at +2.0% and I will update accurately on Monday. | gateside

06/1/2023 22:24 | @Gateside, no problem regarding your figures, some things in life are more important :) I had a great run at tennis recently winning 14 consecutive singles matches against players all around my level. No idea why I hit form, if only I could bottle it, I have lost 3 of my last 4 since :( Singles match tomorrow, weather permitting, and out with my daughter and her dog on Sunday. Back to the day job on Monday, being part-time and working Mon/Tues/half day Wed meant I was off from 21.12.22 until 9.1.23 without using any A/Leave. Got Joiner booked for Monday to fit two Velux windows and a bathroom fitter for 30.1.23 to refurb both bathrooms. It's going to be a busy few weeks. Like everyone else so far a positive week: Best Riser: DLG +5.88% Worst Faller: ADIG -2.94% On the week/YTD: +1.72% wllm :) | wllmherk
06/1/2023 21:12 | PLUS's -4%+ took me down 0.3% today, with the rest continuing my very mixed bag theme this week. YTD +1.1%. I suppose that puts me bottom but it's a great first week. However, US market action just makes me more nervous! Reports that weakish employment numbers were seen as market-positive since not bad enough to be recessionary but not great so Fed might only raise 0.25% struck me as an odd interpretation of the data. There was zero total earnings growth in Dec due to falling hours worked. That was not inflationary at all and might well be recessionary and match the terrible trading updates. The Nasdaq seems to have bounced off that support on the "good" interpretation. Currently +3.1%. A bright day with occasional sun as the mild spell continued. 10.9C after 5.4C. Enjoy the glow of a positive start and have a good weekend. | aleman
06/1/2023 20:55 | Nice to see all who have reported in positive territory.I hope its not going to be a repeat of last year.positive for the first 2 weeks then downhill for the rest! Still ERNIE started the year right with £100 | malcolm caton

06/1/2023 18:20 | Portfolio +0.17% , miners AAL and RIO by far the best today, smaller companies mainly poor, ESNT, UPGS and VID. For the week and YTD = 3.12% Took the christmas tree and decorations down today. Never sure if it should be done on the 5th or 6th january :-) Had the leaf blower out for a while. About 90% of leaves now cleared. QPR at Fleetwood in the FA Cup tomorrow. We've never played them before. We're having lunch at the golf club again. Catering there has vastly improved. Hopefully a hike with big boots on sunday. Good weekend everyone. | philanderer
06/1/2023 18:16 | Been away from the screen today, will update tomorrow! | mrphil
06/1/2023 17:47 | I'm up +0.923% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.865%), up 3.21% on the week and YTD (FTSE100 +3.32% and HIX +3.26%). Best rises: S32 +4.94%, BHP +2.69% and SMDS +2.47%. Worst falls: CPG -1.32%, IMB -0.72% and LLOY -0.64%. Miners had a good say. Time to fetch the fish & chips. Haven't done the quiz, yet. Thanks for the info re PSON, philanderer. Sorry about your mum, Gateside. Have the best weekend that you can. DF | deanforester

06/1/2023 15:56 | My monitoring of this situation suggests this problem has finally stopped over Christmas after 6 months of price gouging, typically by about 15p per litre. I wonder when the enquiry will manage to report the obvious? | aleman
06/1/2023 14:18 | Famous last words. Warm weather. | freddie ferret
06/1/2023 14:17 | US average hourly earnings growth was down to only +0.3% in December. BUT .. average weekly hours worked fell from 34.4 to 34.3 so monthly earnings were flat m-o-m (annual down to +6.2% from 11.2% peak) in Feb. If monthly earnings have completely stopped rising, where is the inflation? | aleman

06/1/2023 10:51 | Prices fall for second consecutive month in Europe. So the 0.75% rate rise at the end of October and recent inversion of EU yield curves were unnecessary? (German 2-year yield now 2.67% and 30-year 2.22%.) | aleman
06/1/2023 10:43 | Christmas holidays and warm weather seems to be behind a significant drop in flu statistics last week. Add in a further fall in other winter viruses and hospitals will be grateful for the relief, even if it only proves temporary. Weather since bodes well, though. That's just as well since the current excess deaths spike is nearly 1/3rd the magnitude of the one that sent us into lockdown on 2020 - with the proportiong of flu deaths within it being about twice Covid. Flu vaccinations are down a bit this year. I suspect recent experiences with the autumn Covid booster will not be helping. We've had numerous ill people and a couple of deaths locally after the latest round. Uptake of the autumn booster is well down in over 50s - roughly 60% versus 80% previously. I'd expect any further rounds to be much lower, based on the local chatter about reactions after this one. Maybe they should go back to offering them separately since criticism of the flu vaccine has never been more than isolated instances. | aleman
06/1/2023 09:22 | Good morning. There were 4 significant profit warnings in the US yesterday so 2023 has not started well. The market was red for the third consecutive day and the Nasdaq 100 is testing support. (Remember US consumers have bigger stock holdings than UK.) Bed, Bath and Beyond (home furnishings) was the one I mentioned but there were also Constellation Brands (booze), RPM (house paints/coatings) and I forget the other. I presume US earnings forecasts for Q4 and 2023 are going keep being revised further into negative territory (already a steep -10% in Q4 for smallcaps). I don't know where media get this myth that the US economy is holding up well. Mortgage rates rose last week and the gas price tumbled again yesterday which will not help the general outlook. US 6-month yield is 4.84% and 30-year 3.79% - a 1.05% inversion, suggesting the Fed has lost the plot. free stock charts from uk.advfn.com | aleman
