17/1/2023 14:45 | Right so we now have our vacancy listed on four different social media sites as well as the Gov.uk job centre site. We have had one "applicant" through LinkedIn who's a student in Coventry and just received a second one, this time through the Job Centre and he's an investment banker from Ghana! I am highly suspicious there must be some sort of scam going on whereby foreign nationals manage to get onto the Job Seekers scheme and have to be seen to apply for jobs to keep the payments flowing - why else would we always get such ridiculous applications from Africa whenever we advertise with the Job Centre? | mrphil
17/1/2023 14:29 | Just back from the Post Office renewing my passport - £85.00 for the passpor renewal plus £16 'handling fee' !! | philanderer
17/1/2023 12:06 | UK gas hit another new low this morning despite colder than predicted temperatures and even wind easing off. It's only a bit above twice 2021 levels now. 45GW demand is the highest I've seen through the day this winter. EU gas reserves are around 81% which is still close to the average NOVEMBER peak with OVER HALF the winter drawdown season completed. We could be headed for a big glut and back to normal prices or lower within weeks. | aleman
17/1/2023 12:01 | Morning everyone. Just could not drag myself out from under the duvet this morning, too cold, missed breakfast. Portfolio looks asleep as well. | philanderer
17/1/2023 11:56 | Ken Bruce has just announced he is leading radio 2 after saying this last month!!! "Radio 2 legend Ken Bruce says he'll never leave his mid-morning show unless he's fired - but would then do the shipping forecast just to stay on air." | skinny
17/1/2023 10:29 | Croatia prices fell last month. | aleman
17/1/2023 09:33 | Morning. Clear sunny and frosty here. The Blackbirds are stripping the berries of the Myrtle bush, they seem to prefer them to the cotoneaster. | malcolm caton
17/1/2023 09:32 | I've just checked the shed, currently -4.7, with an overnight low of -6.6C. | skinny
17/1/2023 09:22 | Good morning. Sounds nice and warm there, MrP. Up the Vale of York a bit at Topcliffe, it was -9.0C but you had -8.9C down South at Benson. My face was numb when I got back from the school run. That's with no wind this morning and the sun is out. 17/1/2023 08:37 | Morning All. A high of just 6.8°C yesterday and the shed thermometer was reading -1.9°C this morning although the car reckoned it was -4°C at the bottom of our hill! The new lights on our new "improved" roundabout have definitely lengthened journey times. According to the journey app on my car, it has added two minutes to each journey and probably reduced life expectancy through the frustration caused sitting at red lights when no traffic is going in the other direction! I suppose it's the same people that designed the ridiculous "smart" M27 so we shouldn't be surprised, although our money could have been spent on something rather more useful! | mrphil
17/1/2023 08:27 | Good Morning. Thanks Phil :-) As forecast a cold night with a heavy frost this morning - unfortunately, we have a decorator here today, so I'll spend my time making sure the front door is shut as much as possible. Talking of bills for pets, we've been looking to book a week / 10 days away in the next month or so but cannot find a cattery with vacancies. It seems that due to a change in regulations, quite a few have closed down and those that are still running are fully booked - even though the cost has risen from@£11 a night pre-covid to @£16 now. | skinny
16/1/2023 19:44 | Skinny, there's more than enough, it's a big pie , twenty minutes to go :-) | philanderer
16/1/2023 19:32 | I'm up +0.335% on the day today (FTSE100 +0.204%), a new high for me. Best rises: MKS +2.88%, BT.A +2.60% and TW. +2.27%. Worst falls: RIO -1.98%, BHP -1.72% and NG. -1.06%. Miners were the big drag on my figures. Teleecoms are doing well. Cold today after a lot of rain in the night. No signs of snow on the downs. Potholes are multiplying. DF | deanforester
16/1/2023 18:59 | +0.15% Folio, [FTSE All-Share +0.27%] ASY, BERI, SCLP, best risers. VANL -7.4%, BHP, RECI, RIO, worst fallers. Talking of vets, our old lady in dog years, picked up a bowel infection from the vets surgery two days after a recent regular visit for expressing glands, it couldn't have been any other cause*. So she was back again for consultation & antibiotics. *I had let her for once lie on the waiting area floor, normally as a small dog she can sit on the seats with me. Recovered now, don't get me onto the subject of vets fees or pet insurance. | blueliner
16/1/2023 17:35 | Up 0.45% more risers than fallers. Took the cat to the vet for his annual booster. £53. You can see why people would give their pets up or not get them vaccinated. Fair to say the cat didn’t thank me for it either and is skulking under the bed. I’ll have to give him some tuna later to make it up to him. -1C, have tennis this evening if the courts are fit. | dr biotech
16/1/2023 17:17 | I'm -0.6%. No obvious stand out. Just a bit of weakness across the board. I went for a bike ride late morning. It was very cold despite the sun but had dried out some. My destination for a butty was still flooded so I came back all in one go without getting warm in between. My fingers were frozen and hurt as they warmed up after. Despite the wind easing slightly, it felt even colder this afternoon, again despite being very sunny. The high was 1.8C after -0.7C. It's now -2.3C and the central heating seems to be struggling a bit with the windchill in 10mph, gusting to 15mph+. Despite the bitter cold, UK gas closed near its low at -16% - presumably because wind is producing fairly well at 12GW so gas is far from its limit at 16GW. | aleman
16/1/2023 17:07 | Flat on the day(-£130) best risers FEVR,SNR,BERI,EMG,FD Worst fallers ZOO,NANO,MSHL,RIO,BH | malcolm caton
16/1/2023 17:01 | I finished up 0.27%. Currently 1C with a cold chill. Phil - set an extra place. | skinny
16/1/2023 17:00 | Reasonable day in the end, +0.51% BERI, IKA & SSE Selling a chunk of both BP. & BERI last year doesn't seem such a good idea now, albeit I did OK on both and still have a fair few! We had our tree surgeons round this morning to trim the bulk of the hedging. Four guys were there just after 8:00am and were done in about 1 1/2 hours. They do an excellent job, we've used them for years. The council contractors do the other side but it takes them days and they really aren't to the same high standard. | mrphil
16/1/2023 16:51 | Portfolio +0.48% , top gainers VID, MKS, ABF, SBRY and HILS .... main faller RIO. Much colder today 4C with a fair breeze. Started pruning the gooseberry bushes, cold hands with many cuts and scratches. I've made a beef mince pie with onions and carrots for dinner , spuds and peas and gravy :-) | philanderer
16/1/2023 15:56 | UK and EU gas have both plunged about 15% to 14-month lows (well before Ukraine). This seems crazy with Spain, Greece, Turkey and North Africa expecting frosts until the end of the month. The US is not looking particularly warm either. | aleman
16/1/2023 14:07 | I was wondering why I was not seeing any profit warnings and only bits of lame news. No snow here. Just a cold, windy, frigid spell, then back to cold and sunny. If month to month prices are falling, why do we need more rate rises which might make disinflation worse? In December, the German wholesale inflation rate softened from 14.9% to 12.8% versus a forecasted 13.3%... ... Month-on-month, the wholesale price index fell by 1.6% versus a forecasted 1.2% decline. The Index fell by 0.9% in November. Today’s wholesale inflation numbers aligned with the December manufacturing PMI survey. According to the December survey, the rate of input cost inflation fell markedly to its weakest in over two years, supported by a fall in demand for inputs contributing to an easing of supply chain pressures. Factory gate prices also saw a sharp fall to a 22-month low. Israeli CPI on target since July - 2.2% annualised versus 1-3% target. Rates lifted 4 times during that from 1.25% to 3.75%. | aleman
16/1/2023 13:51 | Forgot about this.... US markets will be closed for Martin Luther King day. | philanderer |
